LDF
i can't get enuf of reading anything on the sox minor leaguers. i just got done reading the report on Kannapolis and that was a good artilce. but the way>>> Edgar Valera (3B) Bats: Left Throws: Left - .330 BA, 62 H, 8 HR, 29 SO, 13 BB, .527 SLUG% is this correct? a left hand throwing 3b? but i was excited about the young prospect coming thru the system. Cerbaho-WG
I believe he is a lefty. He could be one of those freaks who bats left and throw right, not positive. I'm probably going to spend the next hour or so finishing up my Winston-Salem report, have about 6 or more guys I want to talk about. Rex Hudler
Birmingham Roster (if I can recall 100%..... I may be off a guy or two) Pitchers Bajenaru Bullard Cotts Eason Malone Meyer Pacheco Ring Smith Ulacia West Yofu Catchers Aceves Maldonado Infielders Alvarez (Gabe) Battersby Hankins Reyes Sandoval Shaffer Saunders Outfielders Bikowski Durham Holt Piniella
Cerbaho-WG
Rex, wouldn't you expect Eason to be moved off to AAA Charlotte? He did very well in Birmingham last year, but did struggle a bit in Charlotte. I also believe Malone will be in Charlotte.

It has been set, unless changes are made tomorrow after the exhibition game, but none are expected.
Jim Fainter
Rex, I thought for sure that Jeremy Reed was ticketed for Birmingham.
Rex Hudler
Actually, a friend told me last week that Eason refused assignment to Birmingham, but later reconsidered. I heard something to that effect on a news report as well.
Rex Hudler
No Reed....... He was in Kanny last year, so I would guess he'll be in W-S.
SoxFan1
i hope that some of these guys will do good if (god forbid) a big injury happens!
Cerbaho-WG
Something is wrong, Heath Phillips should be on the roster. It doesn't make any sense AT ALL to keep him in Winston-Salem for another year.
Rex Hudler
I belive Bullard posted about Phillips. Had soreness (not sure if shoulder or elbow) and had not been throwing in ST. Started late so will go to W-S or stay in extended ST. Birmingham's rotation is Malone, Cotts, West, Ulacia and Bullard (not necessarily in that order). Apparently Ulacia threw very well in the spring (and looked very good last night - dropped a lot of weight) so they are giving him another shot. Diaz was rumored to be headed for Birmingham until Stewart made the Big Club this week. Put all those possibilities together and there is no room for Phillips, healthy or not. cwsox
I appreciate everyone who knows all this stuff and shares the information with us. I have never felt so in touch with the whole orgainzation. Thanks all!
Jim Fainter
How did Eason do last year, Rex? I can't bring up last year's minor league stats, maybe they've been purged. Also, I wonder if there is a tendency now to bring up our best position prospects too slowly. e.g. Reed, Webster. What do you think?
Chisoxfn
Well Webster is so raw. He played a short season so you can't possibly rush him. This guy is an amazing athlete that is still learning a whole lot about the game. He's got to be in A Ball, most likely for the full season, otherwise you'd be putting so much pressure on him. In the case of Reed, he should be in Birmingham either to start the season or rather quickly make it there; as long as he keeps hitting. Prospects just take time. Going a little slow is better then going too fast, imo. I don't think they are going too slow though.
Jim Fainter
Chisoxfan, I see your point on Webster. But not Reed. This guy had, what, three years of big time college ball? He should be the perfect candidate to skip a classification or two. And some of those studs from last year's Bristol team should be able to skip Kanny and go straight to W-Salem, I would think. Chisoxfn
Maybe, but it depends on what kind of experience they have. If they are highschoolers with little experience then they should go slowly. Half a season in Low A, half a season in High A if they prove ready. It takes time. If you do that, then you spend a full season in AA and a full season in AAA, that really isn't that long in the minors, especially if you are a highschooler. If your in college, then its quicker. You start off in A Ball at first. Then you quickly go to AA and if your rocking you'll hit AAA. Some of them will do that all in one years time. It is important not to rush a guy through a level. I understand if its a college player to start them in AA, but highschoolers need to start out slowly. Although many college playesr start in A where you can see how they handle it, if they can then you quickly move them up. Better to put them a bit too low, find out in about two weeks and then move them up, then put them too high. Wait two weeks, see them in a huge slump and let it effect them mentally. Rex Hudler
Sometimes a guy is not promoted strictly because there is not room for him. They say the largest jump for a Minor Leaguer is from Class A to AA, so the jump from Low A would be even bigger. Nothing wrong with making a guy earn it. Rushing him does him no good because it just creates a logjam at the top and then he slows down when he gets to AAA if there is no room in Chicago. In reality, Chad Durham should probably be in AAA right now, but there is no place to put him on that roster.
Rex Hudler
Eason was great for Birmingham last year. He was 5-2 with 4 saves and a 2.00 ERA. He made 3 or 4 spot starts, including one in the playoffs and excelled every time. He is a very good AA pitcher, but may be a marginal guy at AAA. He earned a spot in Charotte, but again, there are only so many spots on a roster.

Rex Hudler
My guess is no he is not good enough to make the Majors. He could do well in AAA in the right situation, but doubtful he could be as good as last year (even in AA again). He was a very important of the Barons staff last year and is a guy you would love to have on your team and in your clubhouse.

I'm fairly positive, that two years ago Clay Eason was named the Pitcher of the Year in the Independent League. After that, he was signed by the Sox. Didn't know he was pitcher of the year, but with those numbers it doesn't surprise me. I think he was drafted by another Org and then released, but I am not sure about that. For some reason, the Phillies are sticking out in my head, but could be off there.
