Mr. Showtime
This was in today's Trib: So now the Cubs—and the Yankees, Angels and perhaps the Mets, among others—will have a foundation from which to build their pursuit of the center fielder and middle-of-the-order hitter. The Cubs are thought to be serious Beltran bidders unless the stakes reach 10 years and more than $18 million. At Houston's figure, even the White Sox might want to consider re-entering the Beltran sweepstakes amid continued speculation he might like to play for them. White Sox general manager Ken Williams has said he would not consider any Scott Boras clients, including Beltran and his own Magglio Ordonez, because the financial demands were too high. But Ordonez made $14 million last season.

Mr. Showtime
Oh don't tease me like that I just don't know where these whispers are coming from. I'm guessing that it's just a way to get another team into the bidding.
EvilJester99
Sox want to make a serious PR splash...go out and sign Beltran and trade for Hudson. Yes it would be a ton of cash but hell to draw a crowd like they would they would more than make up for it. Plus not to mention the national media would be forced to talk about the White Sox...Yeah I know...Nice pipe dream but hell why not dream because we all know thats all itll be. Molto
I just don't know where these whispers are coming from. I'm guessing that it's just a wa to get another team into the bidding. well, Beltran does have family in Chicago, so at least saying he wants to play in this city makes some sense and isn't all just bulls*** to raise his value. At that price, Beltran would be doable for the Sox. At 15+ mill, no.
USAF_11F4H
At that price, Beltran would be doable for the Sox. At 15+ mill, no. At what price? That snippet only mentioned that "$18M and/or 10 years was too much.." Did it mention anywhere else a figure of Magglio-like at $14M? southsider2k5
the article mentioned the Astros "offer" believed to be $13 mill/ yr over 6, 7 yrs. Supposedly thats about where the Yankees were bidding too.
beck72
Supposedly thats about where the Yankees were bidding too. Seeing how only two guys [Tejada and Vlad?] have gotten $15 mill + deals the last few years, I'd be surprised if Beltran got much more than that. Even from the Yanks
SoxFan562004
I think all of the teams offers to Beltran will be low ball because they want to force Boras to come back with a number. Teams don't want to outbid themselves like the Rangers did with A-Rod. It seems the Angels are gearing up to make a run, so I think their offer will probably be a fair gauge of his market
The Critic
Seeing how only two guys [Tejada and Vlad?] have gotten $15 mill + deals the last few years, I'd be surprised if Beltran got much more than that. Even from the Yanks It's a tough call - the market seems to be skewing slightly downward, yet Beltran is so hyped as the Premier Free Agent in this winter's market that it seems someone would overpay. I think Pedro's decision could have repercussions on Beltran's bidding. If Pedro returns to the red sox for less than the Mets offered, perhaps that sends a message that location is more important than top cash and that keeps the bidding relatively low? CanOfCorn
This is a tough one. Boras might be playing some major hardball. Beltran is the best 5 tool player out there. Better than the previously mentioned A-Rod, Vladdy, and Tejada. Each one of those guys does one thing better than the others, but Beltran's 5 tools are all above average. And that playoff showing...wow! He still won't get 10/$200, but he will probably get $15+. Just not from the Sox. EDIT: Sorry, posted right after Critic. Basically saying the same thing. beck72
I think it's a pretty sure thing that no one else will get a $15 mill a yr deal, besides Beltran. I think that's the "collusion rate", with teams saying anything above that is too much. And his unreal playoff run notwithstanding, he's not worth more than $15 + mill a yr. for the next decade. If any of the long term contracts have shown the owners, anything can happen to make huge contract an albatross, where even the best players [manny, arod, etc] wind up being unaffordable for a team

winninguglyin83
Hey, at a launching pad like The Cell Beltran could put up monster numbers. But I suspect Boras is using as many teams as possible to drive up the price before his guy goes to a large market team. He used the Sox in the ARod sweepstakes, remember? I have no doubt he would be huge here, but I would be shocked if we got into the bidding for the exact reason of the Arod happenings.
