SnB
Over xmas break, jan 6-10th, i'm taking my first real trip w/o my parents, (I'm 18) Flying to london, ontario to see the girlfriend, w/ a change of planes in detroit. I'm just wondering if you guys got any tips for travelling over the border or just traveling in general. I'm kinda nervous about the whole thing. -I don't need a passport right? I think all I need is my driver's license and my birth certificate. got any tips?

Spiff
I drove up there in June. You need a birth certificate to get in. Canada is different than the US, but not that different. Gas is more expensive, I didn't like the food as much, but Toronto really is a lot like Chicago. I forget where London is, but it should prolly be a good time. Flying on your own is cake. I did it a couple years ago when I was 18. Gates are real easy to find. You don't usually have to rush to get from gate to gate. You should be fine. I don't know about drinkin, the guy at the liquor store I went to in Ontario said the age was 19.
southsider2k5
I have been to Canada about half a dozen times now. As Spiff said you need ID to get in and out sometimes. The best advice it be respectful, and clearly think about, and answer all of the questions they ask you. (there is a story behind that, that Kap can tell you all if he wants to) They'll ask you about what your plans are, where you are staying, if you are bring guns, plants, alcohol etc. If you answer funny, then they will subject you to a much more intense search. Being young, they will probably check you closer. London is about the halfway point between Windsor and Toronto, and it is decent sized town. I don't know much about it though, as we only drove through it. Do yourself a favor and sample the Canadian beers, if you are beer drinker. IMO, and many others, they are much, much better than the vast majority of US beers. Also try to convert as much currency as you can at an actual currency exchange. If you use a bank they have much wider exchange margins, and if you use a debit or credit card, they will probably charge you a fee on top of your exchange rate. Other than that have fun! If I remember anything else I will post it.

Rex Kickass
The drinking and gambling age in Ontario is 19, one year higher than the rest of Canada. You do not need a passport to cross the border, but it does make things easier. They are only 70 dollars and I believe there is a passport agency in Chicago where you can get it made same day. I know nothing about London, Ontario except that you may be able to get some Cleveland stations on your FM dial. They have a good rock station, I seem to recall from a weekend off the Lake Erie shore. But that was 5 years ago. Your miles may vary. I think the standard rules of travel apply here: Smile, be polite, envision the best vacation ever - and you'll probably have it. Have a blast, man! Cutting it close--especially in the winter weather.....Plus, are you looking at leaving time or boarding time? If it leaves at 7 you aren't allowing yourself much time to cross the huge detroit airport if it's running late....

Like soxy said, in the summer that's fine, i wouldn't feel too bad with that layover. But in winter, you're running a much bigger risk of having longer delays. Also, Don't check any bags if you've got a layover... Use two smaller bags, like one of those roller things and a backpack and carry them on.
