Working Out

I have recently started workin out on a regular basis in order to work off the added alcohol mass. im not that experienced so i was wondering if someone who is knowledgelable about things like this could help out. What is better for me to do: left heavier amounts with less reps and sets, or do lesser amounts with more reps and more sets. my goal is just to build some muscle mass. thanx guys
