beck72
On the Score this PM, KW spoke a little about his philosophy of going after players. He said something to the effect that when like 5 other teams are going after a top player at a certain position, it's unlikely he'll top a bid with all that interest. So, he'll target the #2 guy, build a relationship, talk, etc. [i'm also assuming he'd talk to other GM's about possible trades this way, and could target a #3, or #4 guy as well, depending on the fit of the player] By the time the other 4 teams get around to the #2 guy, KW will have a leg up on the competition. Following that logic, which players could the Sox be targetting fit into that category, at various positions? I came up w/ a few to get the ball rolling SP via trade #1 --RJ #2 --Hudson? CF #1 --Beltran #2 --Finley, Burnitz? C #1 --Varitek #2 --Matheny? Other ideas?
santo=dorf
How come I am reading that only the Nationals are interested in Odalis Perez?
Guest JimH
My idea is we will drive ourselves crazy trying to continually speculate. No one saw the Hermanson thing coming. While it's fun sometimes to speculate, I get the feeling when something happens, it'll be different than what we expect. Unless of course they sign Dye. DBAHO
How come I am reading that only the Nationals are interested in Odalis Perez? Because Jim Bowden is crazy and will probably offer him an insane deal.
Gene Honda Civic
I've gotta believe that KW has his hat in the O. Perez chase. I know he'll be in the Russ Ortiz raffle too. So basically, it's going to come down to who is stupider, Jim Bowden or KW. At the first turn, it's too close to call.

Gene Honda Civic
Dunno, Bowden's already opened up a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide lead. I meant just for those two Guys... I think Bowden could concievably land both of them. (I don't know what his budget) Given the same price, I would prefer Perez to Ortiz, though I think Ortiz is going to command more. Matheny seems possible, but then, didn't KW say he thought highly of Ben Davis?

(I don't know what his budget) Given the same price, I would prefer Perez to Ortiz, though I think Ortiz is going to command more. So to augment the team's value, MLB allows this guy to burden the Nationals with a boatload of bloated contracts, meanwhile surrendering draft picks. To INCREASE the team's value. I'm not arguing with you, I think you may be right, I just think that's one of the worst thought-through plans MLB's come up with. And I do remember the steroid testing plan. Flash Tizzle
While it's fun sometimes to speculate, I get the feeling when something happens, it'll be different than what we expect. I don't recall one acquisition (besides Garcia) which was accurately predicted. Whether its Bartolo Colon, David Wells, Juan Uribe, Roberto Alomar, Carl Everett there wasn't proir speculation of their arrival here. KW stating his intentions ofworking "under the radar" shrouds more mystery on this offseason. Even for Garcia, the popular consensus was Rauch/Majewski/B Prospect would landed him. (Search through old threads) No one believed Olivo would be included. I wouldn't have been surprised if Williams would have traded Lee in place of Konerko (including Garland/Andersen) in exchange for RJ. If he would have accepted a trade here, that is. Because if Mike Murphy if speculating Dye's arrival to the southside I'll refuse to believe it. sorry, should have been more clear.... When KW was on with Boers and Bernstein Boers said "So can we talk to you when the Dye signing is official?" and KW just went quiet and snickered then said "I'm sorry, my phone broke up, what did you ask?" -It's on the KW on the radio post.... So nothing official, but it sounds that KW is at least interested in him
elrockinMT
Beck, your first mistake here is to assume there is some logic in these moves and then try to put you finger on it.
striker
Who are some other pitchers that are gonna get big raises in arbitration or that will be free agents after 2005 that might be on the block? Ben Sheets was a name that was thrown around a little last year. I wonder if for the right price he might be available.

They outdrew the White Sox last season, and had a $30 million payroll.
AddisonStSox
RF-Dye (One-Two year deal with a third-year option) SP-Via Paul Konerko Trade (Not even going to begin the speculation) SS-Renteria (Flagship move of the off-season) That's it folks. Please, there is no salary cap in baseball and we are on the short end of that deal. Don't expect Pavano, Beltran, etc. just ain't gonna happen. Guest JimH
We need some trademarked ideas on this subject, where's the expert (quickman)? Ok, let's see ... Get a starter so we have a legit 1-5. Get a veteran middle infielder who can play over Harris and/or be a safety net for Uribe ... seeing as how they're supposedly going with Uribe as the starting SS. We need a RF too, preferably a left handed bat And I'd love a CF instead of a RF because I'd slide Rowand over. When Anderson is ready, he's ready and we'll worry about it then. Barring getting a CF, see above . Oh, and can we please get a veteran backup catcher if 35th and Shields is sold on Ben Davis, and make Jamie Burke the 25th man? The good news is, the bullpen looks ok to start the season. Can always tweak that later if (when) the need arises .
Chisoxfn
Perez would definately have to be a factor and I think you'd have to count Clement as a possibility on the free agent market as well. Jermaine Dye is going to be a major factor, imo.
