Sox deny steering Maggs to Vienna

December 9, 2004

After declining to address agent Scott Boras' claim that the White Sox recommended a European doctor to Magglio Ordonez, general manager Ken Williams disputed that claim Wednesday.

Asked to comment on various statements by Boras regarding Ordonez, Williams elected Tuesday to take the high road and only pay respect to the free-agent outfielder's production during his Sox tenure.

A day later, Williams had a brief retort to Boras' statement that the Sox should have had access to key medical records regarding a second knee operation on Ordonez.

''It is important to note, No. 1, the name of the surgeon was given to Magglio from the staff of the White Sox,'' Boras told the Sun-Times late Monday. Boras was not Ordonez's agent at the time of the September surgery.

Williams denied the Sox had directed Ordonez toward having a second operation in Vienna, Austria. Williams had been trying to get medical records from that surgery since he found out the procedure took place, and he would not extend a contract offer to Ordonez until he learned what procedure was done and what the findings were.

''It's disturbing that some info out of their camp is inaccurate,'' Williams said. ''I'm more concerned with making sure Magglio Ordonez's legacy is intact and the feeling that he will always be a welcome part of the Sox family than I am in trying to defend ourselves.

''I'm comfortable we have all the information and truth on our side. We will excuse ourselves from some of the things that have been said questioning our decisions and actions.''

Like I posted yesterday, KW nneded to refute the Boras claims. If a player did this to the cub all hell would break lose. Post the s*** that Greg Couch wrote. I get the feeling the writers in this town are oblivious to the real world. I guess that is how Sosa becomes an icon and Thomas a whipping boy.

Boras provided an email to Magglio from White Sox podiatrist Lowell Scott Weil, turning him on to the doctor. KW didn't know about it, White Sox doctors did.

Bulls***. Herm didn't know about it. If Herm didn't know.. no one knew.

In the article Scott Weil says Maggs asked him to keep it quite, so he didn't tell anyone about it. Sounds like he (Weil) was the only one who knew.

Dr. Weil is probably in a little hot water with the White Sox.

If it's true, you bet your ass he is. I expect him to be fired soon if this is accurate.

Also.. Boras needs a swift kick in the ass for saying the "Sox" supplied him with the name.

Regardless. Boras and Ordonez are, as of this minite, winning the PR battle.

the same article states the Boras PROVIDED A COPY OF THE E MAIL from Weil giving Maggs the name of the Dr. in Vienna. Let's see the Sox spin it to try to distance themselves from Weil.

I'd prefer to see the Sox just shut up about Magglio f***ing Ordonez.

Has a team ever looked good when a superstar player leaves via free agency? Has a player ever not looked like a greedy sob to the hometown fans when he leaves via free agency? The only team that usually winds up with a positive PR is the team that signs the guy. And that is usually just temporary.

Boras to Cubs, You know we absolutly made up the whole Maddux to the Yankees thing to get more money from you, here's your chance to get even with the other teams. We're floating the Maggs to Cubs rumour to get an offer from someone."

So.. Weil emailed Boras.. not Maggs. Did Boras ask Weil..? Did Weil offer the info..?

And still.. why the hell did Maggs not tell the Sox PRIOR to having additional surgery.

That is the point. IMO anyway.

We might never know those details.

you make a good point, I would think there would be something illegal about an athlete going outside of the organization for medical advice, not to mention major knee surgery.

Its true. Weil admits it, but says he wasn't working as a White Sox doctor when giving Magglio the information. Frank talked to Weil about Magglio, because Magglio confided in Frank, worried that his career was in jeopardy.

So we're back to.. "the Sox did not give Maggs the doctor's name"

Hmm.. he talked to Frank about it. Now I have an angle..
