santo=dorf
Now for the real truth: They wanted to ship Maggs off to Boston, Bring in Nomar and ship him off to LA for a propects. Yeah that would make me feel wanted. :rolly I don't know about you, but there was talk if Nomar was being traded to LA, the Dodgers were going to start by giving us Mota and Perez. Don't forget that the Red Sox were also going to ship Scott Williamson to us. How does a rotation of Buehrle Loaiza Garland Perez Schoeneweis look like coming into season with a bullpen of Koch Williamson Mota Marte Shingo Politte Cotts
Texsox
Wrong. It has to be approved by MLB. Just read would ya.. I posted the damn link to the CBA. :dips*** From that portion quoted above and the few articles I just read, it seems they could just fund the principle within two years. Taking say $20,000,000 if it is deferred for 20 years, the principle amount would be lower than if they deferred for 10 years. Hence the negotiations. It may only need $5,000,000 set aside instead of $10,000,000.
Chisoxfn
Wasn't the Arod deal done prior to the new CBA as well. I thought this latest 2 year thing was part of the most recent bargaining agreement. And yes, players still sometimes get approval.
Dick Allen
Which was approved by MLB. Remember waiting on Selig's approval.... ARod's contract was also signed before the effective date.
Steff
I guess I am. It depends how much is deferred 20 years, how much 10 years etc. It wouldn't surprise me at all if a portion was deferred 20 years. JR has the White Sox in good financial order. I don't believe they have much debt , if any. If Selig would approve such a contract, it would be with the White Sox. Doesn't matter how good of friends Selig and JR are.. there are financial rules in place that have to be followed.

Texsox
Would the player's or owner's insist on more stringent regulations regarding deferred compensation. I find it strange that either one would have negotiated less flexibility into their contracts.

Texsox
And what difference does this make? So the offer came with a "if approved by MLB". Aren't ALL contracts approved by MLB, not just the big ones? I cannot think anyone here thinks Maggs is coming out ahead for turning down the last offer. He lost that gamble when he collided in the outfield. The Sox may have dodged a bullet on this one. I cannot see 5/70 looking like a bargain. Steff
And what difference does this make? So the offer came with a "if approved by MLB". Aren't ALL contracts approved by MLB, not just the big ones? It's my understanding.. ... that they (teams) have parameters they can work within. If they deviate much from that is when MLB takes a closer look. I'm sure they give them all the "stamp of approval".. but ones with a lot of red tape are looked over more closely. Oh.. Just guessing here since I'm in no way, shape, or form involved with MLB other than being, evidentally, a stupid, blind, "something" smoking fan. :rolly
