As I drove by the packed mall today it got me thinking: what's the gift you've most enjoyed GIVING? It doesn't have to be expensive or super cool--but I'm interested to hear...

Last Christmas I gave my parents a 18" glass cross I bought for them in the Vatican. I got it about half-way through my backpacking trip--and I loved it so much, but I was scared it would break...Every night I would check on it and then repack it. Very few gifts I have ever gotten have rivaled the joy I got in seeing them open that....

I'll answer the question. Last year, my friends and I went to Disney World. For Christmas, I took all our pictures and created a 30 minute slideshow that was accompanied by music. I put it on video and gave each of them one. I really enjoyed giving that.

Years ago the Sun-Times coordinated a program where you could answer a letter to Santa with a gift. I asked for one of the letters. It was from a young girl living near the Chicago Stadium. She wanted the types of things that, for my kids, my wife and I would casually pick up on the way home from work, not the type of stuff you would expect as Christmas gifts.

An option was to drop off the gift at the school, which I did. First I called and made certain it was ok. The school administrator I spoke with mentioned to not go overboard and add stuff like bikes and such, as they would wind up getting stolen by bigger kids. In the end I bought some clothes and a couple family games (I prayed she had someone to play the games with) a couple books, no matter how small the gift was, I wrapped each one.

The school she attended was locked, the only way in was with a Chicago cop. I took a buddy with me who wasn't certain he wanted to walk to the school or stay in the car. It was a quiet ride home. Everything was signed from Santa so I never found out if she liked all the stuff.

To this day I cannot imagine trying to be a parent in those circumstances. I would be totally unequiped to teach my kids the types of things they would need to know to survive.

During this Christmas break, and during summer vacations, High School and College kids will take mission trips to Mexico and other far away locals. I suppose it is an eye opening, life changing event. However, I wonder why they cannot find it in their hearts to instead stay home and find a little girl whose letter to Santa isn't being answered.
