when i say ben davis is trash im referring to he is not a good major league player... Also i dont like players who dont take blame for their own problems like davis did blaming seattle.....

personally id rather give burke a million dollars who just didnt get in the major leagues because he was a number 1 overall pick

I really don't understand why you re-up with this guy. He had a short stretch where he hit decent, but overall this guys whole career has been bad.

I doubt they get Pierzynski now.

If AJ signs elsewhere it will have zero correlation to this signing.

Davis signs for $1M to become the backup catcher and personal catcher for Buehrle.

AJ would sign here to play everyday. Earlier reports today had Kenny speaking with AJ's agent about a possible deal. We are in the mix with about 6 teams (I'm not sure how serious some clubs are).

C'mon, would Kenny sign Davis this afternoon after speaking with AJ's agent about bringing him in as a starter?

This deal can not hurt the Sox. If we sign AJ, we get Ben Davis as a backup for $1M; if we don't sign AJ, we have a starting catcher at a steal.

He's better than thousands of other hopefulls that try out every year.. after all.. he IS on a MLB roster. Curious... how far did your MLB career take you.. ;)

And what blaming do he do of Seattle?

I'm glad this worked out. This could of easily been a disaster.

I'd still rather sign a starter then AJ, even if it's just El Duque.

I'm finding myself agreeing with you too much today, Jeckle. Maybe there's something in my coffee. :lolhitting

But, really, pitching has to be the priority and I'm sure it is. I also wouldn't mind El Duque. If it is El Duque I'm sure we can afford to sign both him and AJ.

Does anyone know if El Duque and Contreras got along in NY?

Mike Jackson was on a major league roster last year.

Billy Koch was on a major league roster.

Jose Paniagua was on a major league roster.

That doesnt mean that they are good options for the whitesox. Yes I applaud them for going against the ods and making it to the majors, however we are not a minor league team and therefore should actually try to sign talent that has a chance. His BA over the last few years is pretty terrible. As a backup or personal catcher no problem, its overpaying but hey whatever. As a starter this will be a disaster unless he completely becomes another player altogether.

I dont know.

Sign AJ and use Davis as a personal catcher for buerhle and contreras

when he was first traded here from seattle he said something about it being their fault for his hitting woes and that he recently had his dad help him on his swing... i dont remember exact quote but remember reading it.

Yeah i dont have a major league career and he is obviously more talented than i am lol but i dont think he is talented enuf to be a major leaguer and the only reason he still in the league is because he was a number 1 overall pick... ive even heard some reports on ben davis saying he is worse now than he was when first drafted.

I don't care what he's "worth."

If Kenny signs AJ, I don't care how badly he overpayed Davis.  Personally, I don't think $1M was grossly overpaying.

The guy hit .207 last season. He only hit .231 with the Sox. He was bad and nobody that hits that bad deserves 1 million. Bad signing. Who are we kidding about getting AJP? This is a classic Sox go on the cheap move. The only thing that would make this understandable is if a starting pitcher worth a s*** is signed.

Well, until Kenny says he is done with his off-season signings, I think its best to not call it a "bad" signing.

I'm not a Davis fan, but I can live with paying him $1M if Kenny does, in fact, sign AJ. Supposedly, we are the most aggressive club pursuing AJ.

Even though we are the Chicago White Sox, a one year, one million dollar deal with Ben Freaking Davis is not going to break the bank. I hope Kenny dishes out a hearty serving of crow in the next couple days.

Davis has not caught a single inning of Buehrle.  Burke is his personal catcher.  He will be on the roster for that very reason.

Wasn't it Buehrle that had the biggest beef with AJ? Is AJ going to catch him?

Are you implying we will have three catchers on the roster, or are you implying that AJ will not be brought in?

I hope you're right, but based on history I would guess that this is our catcher for next season.

I wish KW would just go out and get the type of guys that he says he wants (AJP and Eck)

I just don't get why signing AJ should be such a huge priority...

I mean we need a 5th starter. C doesn't have to be an offensive position for us.

It would be nice if it we're but as long as Ben and Jamie can keep themselves above the mendoza line I don't think it's going to be what make or breaks this season.

We need a utility infielder (like Cairo) and a SP well before we need AJ.

Do things have to be done in a certain order?

If you think about it, they could use an upgrade in several positions, and catcher is one.

It doesn't have to be one or the other, nor do they have to do a starting pitcher before other needs. As long as the holes are filled by spring training.

Different opportunities present themselves at different times.

Davis at 1 mil is fine. It's basically a 30% pay cut from what he was making last year. Besides, even if Davis is just a backup, look what the northsiders gave their backup C.

It's not like we have any other options at this point. Pierzynski is deciding between similar offers from the Sox and Tampa.

By the way, how sad is it that Tampa can compete with us salary-wise? What a joke.

So...Kenny disappoints once again.

Ben will be the starting catcher in 2005.

Steff had this one sniffed out for months now.

Except for the fact they did investigate on the Kendall situation and also Pierzynski.

It's clear he's willing to go with Davis and Burke but not completely satisfied ... and he shouldn't be.
