AngelasDaddy0427
This is such good news to wake up to... Finally a 1-5 thats solid and he still has talent. Also I doubt he's really in his late 40's and even if he is an least he's in shape. Welcome aboard El Duque.... KW, bring me an infielder and i'll forgive you now... :rolly
JUGGERNAUT
Would you guys leadoff Eck and have Pod in the 2 slot or the opposite. Eckstein played pretty well in the 2nd half for the Angels. I remember booing his ass the entire first month of the season at the Angel games, back when his OBP was under .300. Then he got his crap together. He's a hustle player and very good defensively, in fact he may be a gold glove defensive 2nd baseman. Plays his ass off as we all know. If he can hit 2.75-.280 or so I'd be pleased, but he's going to have to improve on drawing walks. It kind of worries me cause it may give the Sox a pretty low OBP at the top of the lineup. No no no. Uribe is the #2 guy. That's going to improve the quality of pitches Pods sees. I'm surprised no one looked at that. Compare our lineup to MIL from 2004. Our 2-3-4-5 guys are a major improvement over theirs. That's going to help Pods get on base more. I expect to see good things from this speedster. Harry Chappas
The thing is that the Sox are adding quality arms with experience. Teams do this all of the time, the Sox do not. What if this moves allows Contrearas or Hernandez to move to the pen at some point because McCarthy or some one else steps in. I take this move over overpaying for a three or four that is not better than garland and may not be better than any of our 5. There is a risk that Clement could falter as much as Hernandez and Llowe and hell even Pavano don't have solid track records for what they are being paid. Of the risks being taken by teams on starting pitching, this is low. A dead arm...see Buerhle in the beginning of 03, this is minor, see Clement the last two weeks of the last two seasons. When this guy is on, he is on for $2M, this could be a steal. If Contrearas and El Duque mesh......well we'll see.
YASNY
I have a lot more faith in El Duque than I do in Contreras. Contreras just seems a bit fragile between the ears to me.

I want to see how KW spins this, saying we spend 2m or 4m of our budget.... I think it adds to the possibility that Garland is shipped out for another pitcher... But I'm ok with this move since it solidifies 1-5, but they need to add one more player

It seems like when someone makes an error or he gives up a big hit he seems to get frustrated and start throwing the splitter more than his fast ball
EvilJester99
It seems like when someone makes an error or he gives up a big hit he seems to get frustrated and start throwing the splitter more than his fast ball Thats what they said about Garcia as well.... I seen it last year a little but not too bad though. Contreras just needs to stop relying on the splitter so damn much. He needs to use his fastball more to set up the splitter...not the other way around.
SoxFan562004
Man, the Sox are damned if they do, damned if they don't.... they're making these moves and getting ripped on by Boers and Bernstein for not upgrading anything... but the Cubs are on the verge of doing nothing this off-season and nothing is being mentioned at all about them
Buehrle>Wood
I'm late on this thread but...... I LOVE THIS DEAL!
soxman352000
I really wanted a middle of ther rotation guy to make Garland the fifth starter, but I guess this is better than nothing.
SoxFan1
I like this move. El Duque had a solid season when he came back last year. I really like it. It solidifies the rotation a lot! Buehrle Garcia Contreras Garland Hernandez And with a solid bullpen, the Sox pitching staff may become a strength. Now, if we could just sign Cora or Eckstein, I'd be a VERY happy Sox fan. soxman352000
Now, if we could just sign Cora or Eckstein, I'd be a VERY happy Sox fan. Cora or Eckstein would be great, but I would rather have Cora over Eckstein. It would give us another left handed bat in the line-up
southsideirish71
I have a lot more faith in El Duque than I do in Contreras. Contreras just seems a bit fragile between the ears to me. If contreras could realize that throwing a 95 mph fastball to setup your awsome splitter is so much better than throwing 12 splitters and walking the bases loaded then throwing your 95mph fastball down the cock. He should just throw what is layed down from Davis instead of shaking our catchers off. Watching Bull Durham should be the first thing they do in spring training for the whitesox. "I'm your new catcher and you just got lesson number one: don't think, it can only hurt the ballclub." "A good friend of mine used to say, 'This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.' Think about that for a while." "He's throwing a 2 hit shutout and he's shaking me off, can you believe that ####. Charlie, here comes the deuce and when you speak of me speak well." "Crash: Well he really hit the s*** outta that one, didn't he? Nuke: I held it like an egg... Crash: Yeah? And he scrambled the sonofab****... look at that, he hit the f***in' bull! Guy gets a free steak. (laughs) You havin' fun yet? Nuke: Oh yeah... I'm havin' a blast. Thanks. Crash: Good. Nuke: God... that sucker teed off on that like he know I was gonna through a fastball. Crash: He did know. Nuke: How? Crash: I told him
lvjeremylv
I still think Jon Garland is going to be a stud. Um..how many more years are Sox fans supposed to robotically say the phrase "Jon Garland is going to be a stud"? It's been long enough. I think it's quite clear that this menal midget is never going to have a record better than .500 and his ERA will always be in the high 4's. What a stud. His ERA last season should have been over 5, but a meaningless gem vs. the lowly Royals brought it into the 4's. Woohoo! Great season Jon! :rolly As a #5, I can live with this deer-in-the-headlights on our team. He's definitely a better option than Dan Wright, Jason Grilli, and whatever other losers we had in the #5 spot last season. But anything higher (ha ha..no pun intended) than #5 for this loser is unacceptable.
