JUGGERNAUT
David Wells dubbed him that during his stay in Chicago. The connotations are probably as intended... Yes. It was Wells colorful way of labeling Moronitti as a douche-bag. I'm glad it's allowed.
The Critic
It has nothing to do with the baseball teams. It is about respect for other people. We do not allow people to use terms derogatory to other races, sexes, religions, ways of life, etc. Gay being used to mean dumb is an insult to an entire group of people. It is not cute and it is not funny. Period. I am sorry if this ruins your stay here, but not only is this not Cubstalk.com, it is also not one of those crappy, poorly run team boards where people can say whatever they want and not have to worry about taking responsibility for their actions. We hold ourselves to higher standards than that, and this is one area of those standards. Perfectly said.
raff
juggernault said it perfect. it should be allowed, but the uppers have the final say, they put toghether this site (did a good job) and they run it, but i think a vote should be put into place. one for sexual and one for racial (although i do not think there is a need for this one, it prolly should not be applauded)
LosMediasBlancas
In today's times gay does also means stupid or dumb, but it really shouldn't be used like that. I catch myself saying that outloud but I'm trying to stop because you never know who you could offend. Exactly. In the short time I've been on this board, I've seen a few 'insensitive' posts. JUGGERNAUT
We can only hope that in the grand scheme of things we "old-schoolers" will win out over the "new-schoolers". This whole debate reminds me of the movie Demolition Man. A great flick. If you haven't seen it you should check it out. http://unclebubby.dnsalias.org/wav/demolition_man.htm Friendly: I'm the kinda guy likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder gee, should I have the T-bone steak, or the jumbo rack of bar-b-que ribs with the side order of gravy fries? I want high cholesterol. I want to eat bacon and butter and buckets of cheese, okay. I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I've seen the future. You know what it is? It's a 47 year old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas drinking a broccoli shake singing "I'm an Oscar Mayer wiener." The Critic
Exactly. In the short time I've been on this board, I've seen a few 'insensitive' posts. I'm sure you have, but mine are worded properly, it's just the meaning that's insensitive.... Since I'm not gay, the only problem I have with "gay" as an insult is that it's really weak, grammar-school stuff. There are many many MANY far more effective words to describe stupidity, most of them more fun to say than "gay". tool.....numbnuts.....f***wit.....dolt.....just to name a few. Yes -- heterosexual white males. The most discriminated group in the United States If Mariotti did indeed engage in sexual activities with men, then you could call him gay. If not, it's just a really lame swipe better geared for 8 year olds with no vocabulary or linguistic ability. I just have a problem with the whole thought-police concept. I think it's better to allow the slurs but expect people to remind others it's in jest & to not take offense. I disagree with some of you in terms of tolerance levels. I think ethnic slurs should be tolerated the most & racial slurs tolerated the least because of the sensitivity associated with the groups. Sexual is someone in the middle & encompasses more than just gay or straight. Just as an example, I would prefer greater freedom to call Moronotti a d-g-o than gay. Though I can think of other terms good enough for the Sopranos that would work as well. I wonder if the new-schoolers ever read 1984. Maybe they grow up on Harry Potter these days. I don't know. But 1984, Farenheit 411 were mandatory reading back in my day. It seemed the liberals that taught in the schools were more concerned about free speech rights than political correctness or moral relativism. The best way to fight political correctness & moral relativism is to spend your disposable income on that which they dispise. Gangsta-rap, cigs, booze, uncensored comedy, & just about any other media that features insults & sarcasm. Money makes the world go round. Rex Kickass
I always like cockass. I invented that word. Being gay myself, I can understand why folks get pissed off at that. It can sting a little to have your identity turned into an insult. I say that, not as an oppressed gay man but rather as an oppressed frenchman. I don't find the usage of gay as insulting to me personally, or offensive - just not that smart. Seriously, though - Homosexuals are sooo gay! Too much? RibbieRubarb
This has nothing to do with the "pussification of America" (BTW, if you're listening to Mike North, then that's a whole other issue) Archie Bunker, Sandford and Son..etc were shows based on satire. As were there characters. You are not. This is reality. When you say it in a derogatory manner, it is an offensive insult. Not Satire. I know Norman Lear and you, son, are not Norman Lear. raff
LCR, you are correct. most discriminated group in america is hetero white males. we cant say anything or do anything. i dont like to use racial slurs, unless deserved by an individual. they are stereotypes. let me explain why gay and f** are not stereotypes: (1) by being gay, a choice (i dont care what anyone says), you are admitting to being attracted to men, and possibly having intercourse with a man, which is against Christianity and normal values. (2) being gay is not being lumped into a catagory. obviously, not all black people like chicken, not all white men talk in a low slow voice, not all irish drink , not all chinese boys are smart. HOWEVER, all gay men LIKE MEN. there is no stereotyping. it is the truth. (3) cause its a free country. p.s. i dont use the word gay as an insult often, it is weak, i used it b/c it was a little quick ryhme. Even the most controversial things can be discussed here as adults, without someone telling you the topic is off limits. It might make things look ugly for a time, but in the end it allows people to express themselves and promotes understanding from all viewpoints. RibbieRubarb
(1) by being gay, a choice (i dont care what anyone says), So what you are saying is... Someone would choose to be attracted to men (or women) only. Choose to be persecuted. Choose to be ostracized from their family. Choose to be insulted, beaten and in some cases murdered. Choose to never be allowed to get married. Choose to be denied insurance for those they love. Choose to be denied children, work, and common rights? They would choose all this and more? Why?
