Reality Check

OK, so Garland's not a question mark - we can expect him to underachieve yet again and crumble under pressure as per usual.  Good deal.

Well, moving onto El Duque.  So every pitch he throws could be his last, I guess, since it's "just"  injury that we have to worry about.  That's reassuring. :rolly

And I believe I pointed out that most teams have a ton of question marks.  Did you skip over that disclaimer?

All my question marks are very valid concerns, and that's why I'm not as overly excited as some of the people on here are.  Someone was saying something about getting to the playoffs and challenging the Yankees.  The Yanks would obliterate the Sox.  Just want to give those blind fans a heads up so they don't get their hearts broken come October.

OK, I'll play

Take the Yank's who you seem in awe of:

Johnson has no cartillage in his right knee and has to be shot up before every start.

Jaret Wright is a year back from two shoulder surgeries.

Kevin Brown, at age 39 has bigger issues than just punching walls. In his last 4 seasons he has started 20,17,32 and 22 games.

Mike Mussina went down with a groin last year. His ERA climbed to 4.59, almost a full run over his career average.

Carl Pavano was certainlly lights out last season posting a 3.00 NL era. Very impressive coming off two seasons of 5.16 and 4.30 (Can you say Esteban?)

But the murderous Yanks do have the best closer in Rivera -oh, sorry he lost the pennant for his team two nights in a row!

So to trot out some adages, every year is a new year, and past performance doesn't guarantee future performance.

Will the Sox win? Have to watch the games to find out.

In awe of them? Nah, but the way they perform in the playoffs is second to none. And they have players who know how to win. That's something that can't be underestimated.

And don't kid yourself - Rivera's still the best closer in baseball. The Red Sox just seem to have his number for some reason.

I disagree with your whole post here. The reason they haven't won the series in a couple of years is they don't have the guys that know how to win anymore such as O'neil, Brosius and Tino(in his prime), clemens, Pettite, etc, instead now all they do is go for all superstars. Also I think Gagne is the best closer in baseball right now, but MO is still awesome.

It was second to the Red Sox last year.

Second to the Marlins the year before.

Second to Anaheim in '02

Second to ARZ in '01

Is that a good thing?

In ML2, his character wore his Injuns hat inside-out with "NO WAY" written on it, had a black tape X over Chief Wahoo on his Injuns shirt and every time they did something good, he'd say something like "SO WHAT? They'll just BLOW IT in the playoffs anyway".... :D

I'm just messin' witcha, though - I see as many reasons for worry this year as I do for optimism, but that's the life of a Sox fan every year, isn't it?

No...

We know what we'll get from Garland. A sub-five ERA, with the potential to get it right around 4.25, if he shows more consistency. We know he'll eat up a lot of innings, and overall, he'll be one of the best fifth starters in all of baseball.

Yeah, with any pitch with El Duque, it could be his last. But can't the same be said for Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and Mark Prior? There's risk everywhere with pitchers, but -- everyone from Joe Torre to Kenny Williams have commented on how Orlando keeps himself in very good shape, even at the age of 35, or 39, whichever it is.

You're right -- all of your question marks are valid concerns, but I only see ONE glaring hole in this team, at catcher. You may think I'm crazy thinking Harris or Crede aren't glaring holes, but that's just my opinion. We know the worst we'll get from Crede -- yet, if he's been working hard this offseason, you gotta believe he'll improve. Also, if Harris doesn't improve at all, he'll still help this team out hitting ninth -- he gets on at a pretty good pace. I'd also like to mention that if we get Pierz, we'll have the most complete team since '94 (as BlackBetty aluded to).

Yes! That's exactly what I'm sensing as well.

Every team is going to have question marks...Kenny has done a fantastic job this off-season and it will only get better with the signing of either Iguchi or AJP.

Remember, Kenny has his hands tied more than anyone other GM this side of Tampa Bay.

Our current roster will compete for the division...after that, anything is possible.
