beck72
A baseball astrologer has predicted bad things for Clement, RJ [high injury risk], Nomar, Russ Ortiz and Jon Lieber [bad 2 of 3 yrs]. Interesting that she was at the winter meetings, and has the ear of some baseball big wigs. An interesting quote: "Literally, I could save teams millions of dollars. Baseball and astrology run in cycles. And timing is everything". Though everything should be taken with a grain of salt, it'll be interesting to see which players work out or not. http://nsnlb.us.publicus.com/apps/pbcs.dll...20114/-1/sports We'll see if the sox missed out on getting some of these names. I certainly couldn't imagine how up a creek the Sox would've been if RJ went down for an extended time, after trading PK, Garland and prospects. Maybe that's the key to any deal/ trade-'Hope for the best but expect the worst'. Worst case is the guy you get goes down to injury. The team then has to have a backup plan ready. What I like about the Sox is they are getting backup plans at key spots: closer; bullpen; power guys; OF; maybe C and IF. I'd like the Sox to have a backup plan at leadoff in case Pods gets hurt/ plays like 2004. Iguchi anyone?
Chisoxfn
You don't not make moves because you fear injuries, unless of course a player your acquiring is injury prone. Randy Johnson doesn't fit that bill nor does Matt Clement, despite what people tend to say at times. Both have been rather healthy most of there career, although Clement does put a lot of stress on his elbow. Clement did have some arm trouble, but he's a long time removed from those days. I do think both Nomar and Lieber are risks, but I think Lieber was a pretty good value signing, especially in comparison to two of the worse contracts I've seen in a long time...Benson and Milton. YASNY
I said early in the free agent period that Leiber was the bast value pitcher on the market, but El Duque may turn out to be even more so. Can't fault KW for that signing at all.

WilliamTell
As much as I, among other people complain about KW. I can't complain about his work ethic as GM.

I don't think Cora offers anything that we can't get from Willie Harris. Other than having an adequate replacement in case of injury, Cora doesn't add anything to the team. Iguchi would add OBP and speed at the top of the order in tandem with Podsednik.
aboz56
I think all of the commenting on Iguchi is a bit premature because no one here has really seen him play. Can we really judge what he will do in MLB based on his career in Japan? I don't think so. I personally would rather see AJP signed over Cora or Iguchi. He is a proven commodity at the catcher position and we need a grinder who is a lefty.

I consider Japanese baseball at about an AAA+ level, so it's a decent indicator of what can be expected from Iguchi.

No. It's Arte Johson from the old Rowan and MarTin's Laugh In show from back in the '60's.

The Sox have roughly 6-7 mill free. I think the Sox could get both guys at 3 mill a year, maybe less. Doesn't mean they will though as I'm sure other teams have offers in and maybe those other teams are more attractive to Pyrz and/or Iguchi. I do think the Sox have the money, if they want payroll at 75 mill. However, Kenny may want to leave 3-4 mill in the coughers for June/July to add another player. At that point Kenny can maybe finally make a deal without getting a bunch of cash thrown the Sox way meaning the Sox have to give up an extra prospect or two or a really good one instead of two solid ones. If something opens up that will make this team better in his mind, he'll do whatever it takes to get there. I couldn't even imagine what he'd be like if he had a big budget.
