--INF/DH Ross Gload could play a much larger role in the Sox's success early in the season -- he will be counted on to play some outfield, first base and possibly even DH if Frank Thomas is slowed by an ankle injury. The Sox like Gload's left-handed bat as well as the fact that in the last month of the season he hit .385 with four homers and 17 RBI.

--INF Juan Uribe, who signed a three-year, $9.75 million contract three weeks ago, is rumored to have put on a lot of extra weight this offseason, and not good weight. Manager Ozzie Guillen said at the end of last season that his players had all better come into spring training in shape and ready to play or they won't be playing for him.

Yet another reason why it's so important to bring someone in who can capably play both 2B and SS.

Uribe is a great talent. But by several accounts, there are still some self discipline and maturity issues. Remember Uribe is the guy Guillen said existed on a junk food diet.

Maybe Hydroxy cut and a atkins Diet?

Maybe driving past McDonalds instead of hitting the drive through?

This is the 3rd reference I've seen about Uribe putting on weight. If true, they better get somebody who can play SS.

Heck, if it isn't true they better get somebody who can play SS. The infield as presently constituted is very inexperienced. Not too many playoff teams with very inexperienced infields.

I hope its not true and if it is I'm rather pissed that the Sox would of given him a contract knowing that. I'd of pulled a Paxson and pretty much demanded my players to come into camp in shape.

I think there is no excuse for anything but coming into camp ready to play and in as good of shape as you can be in.

I had a few beers with a cousin of mine last week and he was saying Uribe had put on near 40 pounds. I don't know where he heard it and I was hoping he was wrong, but it doesn't sound like he was.

There is no way it could be 40 pds! For Uribe that's a gain of 25%!

It's just not possible in the 3 months since the season ended.

I could see 10-15 pds. He should be able to lose that. I can't see KW signing him to a 3 yr contract without this issue being brought up. I'm sure he's dieting as you read this. I've got no problem with Uribe. He struggled horribly in Jul (I think) but then bounced back. I hope he can do better in 2005.

What I like about the AJP reports is that Kenny didn't try to deny anything or cookie coat it. Instead he took the route of giving him a third chance.

That keeps the stigma in place & keeps his price down. Less teams will be willing to do that. Of course they probably have a better C situation than the CWS.

In any case this strategy helps me to believe KW will land him soon.

I don't mind a little extra weight in the winter. I always have bought Hawk's theroy on not wanting a guy to be all muscle (Juan gonzalez). That said, he better be able to lose it by February and now that Hydroxycut is ephedra free-he better do it the old fashoned way.

Uribe was awful in both June and July, though moreso in July. He hit .222 4 19 .720 in June, and hit .123 2 5 .419 with an OBP of under .200(.190...that is 5 hits and 4 walks in about 61 PA's)

In every other month, he hit atleast .289 and had an OPS of atleast .884 in every one of those months.

That is the walking definition of extreme inconsistency.

I thought 40 seemed like an awful lot too. I didn't question him since I was more than a little shocked and thought/hoped that he was wrong. 10-15 is definitely more realistic and easier to shed.

Can someone tell me why what I'm quoting are not showing up in the quote box? I have been hitting the quote button, but that ain't working.

Hit the plane quote button, not the one with the quote plus. The quote plus is if you want to quote multiple posts.

40 lbs would be pretty tough to put on in 2 1/2 months, unless you're Sammy Sosa.

I'm not seeing a plain quote button. I'm using Opera for a browser. Would that have anything to do with it?
