Texsox
Found this and thought it was interesting. Just one fans opinion. Looked pretty well thought out and reasonably in order. Allen threatened to win the triple crown at .308 37-113 in this pitching dominated year (league ERA 3.07). Dick (don't call me Richie) led in HRs and RBIs, while Carew took the batting title at .318 (Piniella was in between Rod and Dick, who finished 3rd). MVP VOTING Dick Allen - 1st Wilbur Wood - 7th Carlos May - 21st # 24 - 1990 WHITE SOX Nice season (94-68 +49) as they finished 9 games behind Oakland. Bobby Thigpen with a (still) record 57 saves. MVP VOTING Bobby Thigpen - 5th Carlton Fisk - 15th Ozzie Guillen - 17th # 23 - 1967 WHITE SOX Team went 89-73 (+ 40) and was in it until the last couple days of the season as the A.L. had a wild 4 team race that year. Great pitching staff allowed a league low 491 runs on the season. MVP VOTING Joel Horlen - 4th Gary Peters - 9th Ron Hansen - 14th # 22 - 1916 WHITE SOX Team was 89-65 (+104), finishing two games behind the eventual world champion Red Sox. Led the league with 100 triples (only Detroit (96) had even 70). MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players were Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins and Happy Felsch. # 21 - 1956 WHITE SOX Won fewer games than they should have (85-69) given their run differential (+142). Finished 3rd, 12 games behind the Yankees, and 3 behind Cleveland. The team led the league with a measly 70 stolen bases. MVP VOTING Billy Pierce - 5th Nellie Fox - 14th Sherm Lollar - 16th # 20 - 1960 WHITE SOX Defending A.L. champs went 87-67 (+124) and finished 3rd, ten games back. Led the league in batting and OBP, and had almost twice the stolen bases of any other team. MVP VOTING Minnie Minoso - 4th Al Smith - 6th Roy Sievers - 7th Nellie Fox - 18th Luis Aparicio - 21st # 19 - 1965 WHITE SOX Only 4 other White Sox teams ever won as many games as this overachieving team (95-67 +92). They finished 2nd, 7 games behind the Twins. Early signs of how important a great closer can be, as Eddie Fisher went 15-7 with 24 saves, appearing in 82 games, ALL in relief. MVP VOTING Eddie Fisher - 4th Ron Hansen - 18th # 18 - 1953 WHITE SOX Finished 89-65 (+ 124) in a tough league, 3rd place, 11 1/2 behind New York. Led the league in pitcher's strikeouts (714) and fewest batter strikeouts (530). MVP VOTING Minnie Minoso - 4th Virgil Trucks - 5th Billy Pierce - 10th # 17 - 1905 WHITE SOX Finished at 92-60 (+161) just two games behind Connie Mack's Athletics, this team led the league with a 1.99 team ERA. MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players were Fielder Jones, George Davis and Nick Altrock. # 16 - 1963 WHITE SOX Team was 94-68 (+ 139) but were 10 1/2 games behind a great Yankee team. Pete Ward was second in total bases, and Peters led the league in ERA. MVP VOTING Gary Peters - 8th Pete Ward - 9th # 15 - 2000 WHITE SOX Central division champs were a league best 95-67 (+ 139), but were wiped out in three straight by Seattle in the first round of the playoffs. MVP VOTING Frank Thomas - 2nd Maglio Ordonez - 12th # 14 - 1993 WHITE SOX Western Division winners went 94-68 (+112) with Black Jack McDowell as the league's only 20 game winner (22) as the staff had the league's lowest ERA. Lost the ALCS to Toronto in 6 games. MVP VOTING Frank Thomas - 1st Jack McDowell - 9th Alex Fernandez - 21st # 13 - 1957 WHITE SOX Team went 90-64 (+141) finishing 8 games behind New York as the historically underrated Billy Pierce won 20 games. MVP VOTING Nellie Fox - 4th Minnie Minoso - 8th Billy Pierce - 11th Dick Donovan - 13th # 12 - 1915 WHITE SOX The best RD (+ 208) in franchise history produced a 93-61 record, but only a third place finish behind Boston and Detroit in a weakened American League, as many players had jumped to the Federal League. MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players included Eddie Collins, Jack Fournier, Jim Scott, Red Faber and Buck Weaver. # 11 - 1955 WHITE SOX Excellent season (91-63 +168) as they finished in 3rd place just 5 games behind a very good Yankee team. Billy Pierce led the league with an unheard of (at that time) 1.97 ERA. MVP VOTING Nellie Fox - 7th Sherm Lollar - 18th Billy Pierce - 18th # 10 - 1994 WHITE SOX "Won" the Central division in this strike shortened year (67-46 +135) as "The Big Hurt" took his second consecutive MVP award home. Pitching staff had the league's only sub 4.00 ERA (3.97). MVP VOTING Frank Thomas - 1st Julio Franco - 8th # 9 - 1901 WHITE SOX Won the first A.L. pennant in a league that was probably slightly below major league level in this inaugural season. Team was 83-53 (+188). Led the league in runs scored and in ERA. MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players were Clark Griffith, Dummy Hoy, Nixey Callahan, Fielder Jones, Sam Mertes and the long forgotten Herm McFarland, all who who had 21 or more win shares. # 8 - 1964 WHITE SOX Only 2 White Sox teams ever won more games than this squad (98-64 +143) that finished one game behind the Yankees this season. They didn't win because of a "June Swoon" where they lost 9 games to the Yankees in an 11 day span. MVP VOTING Pete Ward - 6th Gary Peters - 8th Floyd Robinson - 15th Ron Hansen - 16th Juan Pizzaro - 19th (tie) Hoyt Wilhelm - 19th (tie) Joel Horlen - 21st # 7 - 1954 WHITE SOX In a league with two other awesome teams they still managed to go 94-60 (+190) and finish 18 games :-) behind the Indians. The other 5 teams in the league ALL played under .450 baseball. MVP VOTING Minnie Minoso - 4th Nellie Fox - 9th Virgil Trucks - 12th # 6 - 1983 WHITE SOX Tony LaRussa's Western Division champs went 99-63 (+150) scoring a league leading 800 runs despite a team OPS+ of just 100. They hit very well in the clutch and had good pitching. After a 2-1 victory in game one of the ALCS, they were then outscored 18 to 1 by the Orioles in losing the next three games. MVP VOTING Carlton Fisk - 3rd Harold Baines - 10th Lamar Hoyt - 13th Greg Luzinski - 17th Richard Dotson - 20th Rudy Law - 21st # 5 - 1920 WHITE SOX Playing all year in the shadow of the scandal from the prior year's world series didn't hurt them too much as they almost repeated as A.L. champions, losing by 2 games to Tris Speaker's inspired (after Chapman's death) Cleveland club. Team was 96-58 (+129) and featured FOUR twenty game winners for the first time in history (1971 Orioles eventually did it too). MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players were Eddie Collins, Joe Jackson, Happy Felsch, Red Faber and Eddie Cicotte (3 of the 5 never played again after this season). # 4 - 1959 WHITE SOX The Go-Go Sox took home the team's first pennant in 40 years although they were just 94-60 (+81) on the year. Lost the series to a fairly weak (for a pennant winner) Dodger team (88-68 +35) in 6 games despite the heroics of Ted Kluszewski (3 HRs, 10 RBI). MVP VOTING Nellie Fox - 1st Luis Aparoicio - 2nd Early Wynn - 3rd Jim Landis - 7th Sherm Lollar - 9th Bob Shaw - 20th # 3 - 1919 BLACK SOX Lord knows why they were so heavily favored in the series as they were 88-52 (+133) on the year and the Reds were a much better 96-44 (+176). I guess because the A.L. had won the last four world series at that time. MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players were Ed Cicotte, Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins, Lefty Williams, Happy Felsch and Buck Weaver. Only Collins was still playing after 1920. # 2 - 1906 WHITE SOX The "Hitless Wonders" were just 93-58 (+110) on the season, but an incredible four games to two upset of the seemingly invincible Cubs (116-36 +323) in this year's fall classic mandates that they are ranked in this lofty position. MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players were George Davis, Fielder Jones, Frank Isbell, Doc White and Ed Walsh (who won 2 games in the world series). # 1 - 1917 WHITE SOX The only team in ChiSox history to win 100 games (100-54 + 192) they beat a pretty strong Giant team (98-56 +178) for the world championship with Red Faber going 3-1 in the series. This team had amazing pitching (ERA+ 123) with a bunch of different hurlers who had miniscule ERA's on the year. They have done very well in some simulated tournaments that I have run. MVP VOTING No vote this year - Top players included Ed Cicotte, Eddie Collins, Joe Jackson, Happy Felsch (all of whom had 30 or more win shares) and also Buck Weaver and Ray Schalk. greasywheels121
Very cool Tex. Thanks for posting that; it's kind of interesting to see the '93 and '00 weren't higher in the bunch.
elrockinMT
Tex, that was a very ambitious project you undertook. Interesting read. I will have to ponder this for awhile.

For those who are unaware, there was no organized draft back then, and of course, when you're an impressionable teenager, you're going where Babe Ruth and Joe Dimaggio played, are you not? If there was ever a team that should be retracted.....
Texsox
QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jan 5, 2005 -> 11:28 AM) Tex, that was a very ambitious project you undertook. Interesting read. I will have to ponder this for awhile. Just to be clear, I stumbled across it on another site and thought it was a very interesting summary of White Sox history. WilliamTell
That's some really good information Tex. Like a good portion on the people, I remember 3 of the teams, ('93, '94, and 2000.) It still hurts me to know that the Sox a great shot to win the World Series in 1994. That was a great year of baseball before the strike came.
