Big Frank Getting Some Love

I saw that thread too. I was rather surprised and pleased. B)

Meanwhile, on the Cubs board, the same question was posed. Naturally, most of the numbnuts on that board clearly started following baseball when McGwire & Sosa "saved" the sport. :rolly

It's nice to see that the twins fans can respect great players. I have grown up watching the big Hurt He will always be my favorite player.

Me too. I was 11 years old when he was a rookie, and now I'm 26...and he's still here. He is irreplaceable in my baseball world.

I was reading the main board of espn ( first time in years) and this twin fan had this to say and i laughed.

''White Sox blow and will finish 4th in the Central. They have no starting pitching other then Buehrle, they have no bullpen besides Takatsu, and other then Konerko and Thomas (if healthy), their lineup blows. ''

Uh, who gives a rat's ass what any person posting on another board(or this board, for that matter) says about Frank Thomas? Does saying he's good make him good? Saying he's bad make him bad?

I guess if this is the type of thing people look to hear, then I'll say this -- I think Johan Santana is the second-best left handed starter in baseball.

You're welcome, Twins fan looking for validation.

Well, if the enemy is acknowledging the greatness of one of our players, it shows that Frank is that damn good. It validates what we (and every person who has followed Frank over his great career) already know. Frank is most definitely a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and it's always nice to hear people other than White Sox fans admit that.

Johan Santana is not the 2nd best lefty starter in baseball, either. He had 1 very good season as a starter. Let's see him do it for a couple more years before we get all ga-ga about him.

I think it just goes to show what the feeling is "out there" about him getting in. And may be, a hint of what the voters in the media think outside of Chicago. But, alas, probably means nothing. ;)

When was the last time the Twinks had a HOF-caliber player? They're just jealous.

Thomas needs just one more MVP season to lock in the HOF. Right now he's a border-line case. Similar to Sandberg. If he can't get the MVP season then he just

needs a couple of near MVP seasons.

Kirby Puckett, in fact he was a first ballot HOF'er

I didn't see any "jealousy" over there. In fact, most were apparent Sox fans.

How about Rod Carew? He played with Minnesota from 1967 to 1978.

Also, Dave Winfield, Steve Carlton, and Paul Molitor had short stints with the Twins, but I think you're talking more along the lines of a guy who peaked while in a Twins uniform.

Puckett, Killebrew, Carew, Blyleven, Oliva, and very little else.

The main argument against Frank for the HoF is that he has been a DH for most of his career, meaning he has not played in the field, meaning he is essentially a 1-dimensional player.

So, if that argument holds true, someone needs to take Ozzie Smith's plaque out of the HoF...he may have been one of the best defensive SS's of all time, if not the best, but he put up .262 28 793 .666(a career OPS of f'in .666...Ben Davis puts that up in a bad year). He did steal a lot of bases, but this was also in a time period where stealing bases was at one of the all-time highs...during this same time period, Vince Coleman stole 100 bases in 3 consecutive years, one of which his average was .232 and his OBP was .301.

To me, the same argument applies to both Ozzie Smith and Frank Thomas, though just on completely opposite spectrums...Ozzie Smith gets in with no-bat, great glove, Frank gets in with great bat, no glove.

Frank Thomas is a HoFer, and if/when he gets to 500 homers, it should remove all doubt of him being a first ballot HoFer.
