QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 05:26 PM)
When you have a quality hitting left-handed catcher and the backup is a switch-hitter, there is probably virtually no need for three catchers. If Uribe is the backup 3rd baseman in a pinch (assuming Kelly stays in AAA) then hopefully whoever we get to play second-base could fill in a little at third-or be able to play 2nd-3rd.

Which is why I still would prefer Miguel Cairo.

He can play 3rd, and has done it in the majors before.

Excellent point about the switch-hitter reducing the need for 3 catchers, btw...

I'm glad to hear he's been invited to ST. That tells me if he doesn't make it as the 25th man he'll opt to go to Charlotte as the 26th man. With the rash of injuries the CWS has encountered in past years he'd have a good chance of being called up.

I still believe the CWS will go start the season w 12 pitchers. There are too many question marks w 3-5 as to how long they can go & a bullpen that seems tailor made for L & R specialists.

We have had so many conversations you don't know what your talking about. We both agree they will get two more infielders. if they sign Iguchi they will still try to bring someone in or use dransfedt or some other piece of s*** minor league player we have stacked up on. If they don't they could try for cora and another player not in our system. Is Rich Aurilla still available? I know we hate this idea, but he plays ss and third. Any more names to throw out?

Well ... I don't know what I'm talking about but I'll give it a try.

Our thought process has been honed in on free agents only. I'm suggesting if Iguchi's agent and/or Boras' agent play hardball, the Sox have something ready to go ... somebody on another team they've targeted and know they can get. The longer this goes on, the more likely that scenario becomes.

Who would that be? Your guess is as good as mine.

If you were KW, wouldn't you want a solid citizen, a very capable veteran who can step in? Yes. That's why when we talked we did not dismiss Larkin. I doubt it will happen but a similar profile guy. Rich Aurilia might fit the profile as well. Yes, he basically sucks. A guy who's been on playoff teams and knows how to get it done.

Disagree here, I think it will be 11 because there are several off days early in the season and guys would be rotting in the bullpen. They may have to make some moves to get a guy down to the minors though ... some are out of options I believe. Adkins comes to mind.

Who's been invited to spring training? I am just offering my opinion that he won't get picked up therefore the sox will invite him back. That's all

Hell no. A Man that can throw 100 MPH and possibly could become a starter for us in the future or a great closer???? I'm not giving him up.

Couldn't agree more. Jenks is one of those arms that you keep on the roster and hope he figures things out. The upside of that young man is MEGA. Stuff wise when healthy he's as good as anyone in minor league baseball.

Hopefully Burke makes it through but I could easily see a team like the Dodgers or Drays go after him.

My biggest memories of Burke were the many throws from the outfield to the plate that he just dropped, before the Hunter incident.  It cost the Sox a few games that I can remember.

He did seem to have a knack for doing that. :headshake

QUOTE(hi8is @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 03:13 PM)
does designated for assignment mean that he is going to go back to AAA with us or we just let him go peroid and he will no longer be in our org.?

Baseball rules are complicated:

Designated for Assignment

You'll sometimes read that a player has been "designated for assignment."

What does this mean? Essentially, it allows a club to open up a roster spot while it figures out what it's going to do with a player. As we'll see below, there are certain situations in which a team needs a player's permission to either trade him or send him to the minors. So rather than force the player to make a quick decision, the team can simply designate him for assignment while he decides.

More commonly, a player is designated for assignment so the club can open up his roster spot while they're waiting for him to clear waivers, which can take four or five days. Occasionally, a club will designate a player for assignment while they're trying to trade him. That's what happened to Hideo Nomo this past June.

Waivers

Waivers just might be the most complicated single aspect of the rules. In the rule book, a waiver is defined as "... a permission granted for certain assignments of player contracts or for the unconditional release of a Major League player ..."

If a player placed on Major League waivers is not claimed by another team during the three business days after waivers have been requested, then the players is said to have "cleared waivers," and the team has secured waivers for the remainder of the waiver period.

And what does that mean? Essentially, the team can do with the player's contract as it pleases. This generally means one of three things:

(1) They can send him to the minors (subject to his consent, if he's a "Veteran Player," more on that below).

(2) They can release him, which makes the player a free agent and thus available to sign with any team.

(3) They can trade him to another team, even if the so-called "trading deadline" has passed. Any trades made after July 31 may only involve players who have cleared waivers.

If a player doesn't clear waivers -- in other words, if he's claimed by another team or teams -- the club requesting waivers may withdraw the waiver request.

If the club doesn't withdraw the waiver request, the player's contract is assigned in the following manner:

(A ) If only one claim is entered, the player's contract is assigned to that claiming club.

(B ) If more than one club in the same league makes claims, the club currently lower in the standings gets the player.

(C ) If clubs in both leagues claim the player, preference shall always go to the club in the same league as the club requesting waivers.

There are other, more esoteric rules involved here. For example, during the first 30 days of the season, the previous season's final standings are used to determine claim order, rather than the current standings.

Burke may have been designated because KW thinks he will get through waivers without being claimed. I don't have the energy but you'd need to look at all the MLB rosters and see who has an opening and needs catching, or has a back up catcher without a guaranteed contract who they don't like as good as Burke. If he gets through I expect him to be put on Charlotte's roster and be the 26th man this year.

I'm scratching my head here.

Doesn't Ozzie like having 3 catchers on the roster? Not only that he can play CIF and COF too. I hope no one claims him because he would for sure make the team in spring training. I just don't get this. Couldn't we have just moved a minor leaguer who had options off the roster?

There was no room on the roster for Burke. The Sox still don't have a backup SS/utility infielder unless they are going to give that spot to Wilson Valdez. Either way, when a utility infielder is added who would you take off the roster to keep Burke? No one, there is no room.

According to the Daily Southtown, Burke has been sent  to AAA. It doesn't say whether he cleared waivers or not, but I assume if he's at Charlotte, he did. Good insurance in case of injury.

If he's spent sent to AAA he cleared waivers. They can't assign him anywhere until he clears.

There probably hasn't been enough time pass for the Sox to actually assign Burke to Charlotte. That may be what their intentions are, but Burke has the right to see what else is available for him.

I hope it's true that Jamie Burke will still be a White Sox player, even if it is in the minors. Jamie deserves better that the minors, but I'm hoping he will be back with the Real White Sox soon. :crying

I hope Jamie gets everything he wants in baseball as long as it doesn't hurt the Sox.

Seems like almost everyone would like to keep Jamie if at all possible.

I have a strong feeling we will be seeing Jamie in a White Sox uniform in the near future.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU JAMIE
