I'm trying to decide exactly when the best time to go would be. It's a sloooooow day at work. Write a report on the pros and cons of going to the bathroom. Hold a company-wide meeting on the topic and ask for opinions. Send out an email asking for the best time to go. Count the votes and go with the winning time. I vote for 4:45pm. Mercy!
Rabbit Run, Redux and most of "IS Rich" are all genius. As are his short stories. Not as big of a fan as Gunter Grass, but I thought a Rally Grass icon would be a little too much. Updike was never my cup of tea. But I’ll always grant his place in American letters, particularly with those works you named. I used to enjoy reading his take on other writers in his occasional New Yorker magazine reviews. But one of them soured me on him personally forever. It’s funny the stuff that sticks in your mind. I can’t think of Updike now without thinking of that god-awful review (maybe 5 years ago?). Parts of it were jaw-droppingly, intensely homophobic. It’s like he just had to get some nasty stuff off his chest that didn’t even have to do with the novel under consideration. Rex Kickass
He is an ass. Perhaps a Rally Salinger would have been funnier, but I'm sticking to Updike for its intrinsic comedic value.
Rex Kickass
By the way, did you that the real John Updike voiced himself in an episode as Krusty the Clown's ghostwriter? He got to say "John Updike!"
