Personally, I think he will go to the Orioles because his best friend is Melvin Mora, which no one is talking about, so I don't think the Cubs are a lock. Also, the Orioles need to take more risks when in a division with Yanks and Red Sox. So, my vote goes to Baltimore. How bout everyone else?

The Orioles won't be making a move with him at the moment. If they acquire Vazquez for that big group of players including Matos and Gibbons I believe, than it's more likely they'd go after Maggs to fill an outfield gap. They'd prefer Delgado, but it's most likely he's headed to the Marlins or Rangers at this point.

I still consider the Rangers to be in it, if they miss out on Delgado, Tom Hicks is gonna want some sort of run producer on that team if they trade Soriano, even if he's cutting payroll. Of course the Tiggies might just overpay really badly for him considering they've missed out on everyone not named Troy Percival this off-season. The Cubs? Well they've got other things still to focus on, and if they aren't careful could see some team sneak in and take Maggs away from their grasp. But they should still be considered the favorites at this point.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Houston gets involved after losing out on Beltran, unless Boras burned that bridge.

Houston really needs a CF, they've got Berkamn in RF even though he'll miss the next few months. Randy Winn is one they're looking at as a possible acquisition, and we know they're interested in Soriano.

Sun-Times today has the cubs not being interested in Bernitz or Ordonez unless they move sosa. This paper makes no sense. The story is again about sosa and different suitors (Royals, Mets, Orioles, and now the Astros.) My personal thought is there is no team going to take sosa before maggs therefore the cubs need to sign maggs to open options for sosa. FWIW, I think the cubs are done with their offseason and maggs goes to Houston, where I will then become a huge maggs fan.

If career opportunities and waht makes sense playing wise comes into play, an AL team with the chance to play DH makes the most sense. I see a Harold Baines type career for Maggs, especially if the knee doesn't respond.

The Sox are probably lucky he didn't accept the last contract offer.

I expect to see the Maggs of old back this year. I voted for the Orioles because I anticipate them losing out on Delgado. The Rangers lineup would be devastating if they added him. Were the Cubs to sing him, would Maggs move to left even though he's a better fielder than Sammy? I don't think Sosa will get moved now, and definitely not to the Astros (within the division, huh?)

lol...the Yankees?? They too missed out on Beltran, but did however get "their" Randy Johnson. Maybe they'd be willing to get maggs....cuz they have the money for someone else if maggs doesn't pan out(stay injured, or gets injured again).

The Yankees like a year or two ago were looking to possibly get maggs if i remember correctly...now they have a chance.

'Pain-free' Ordonez eyeing Cubs

By Paul Sullivan

Tribune staff reporter

January 10, 2005

On a sunny Sunday in Miami, Magglio Ordonez daydreamed about the possibility of hitting between Aramis Ramirez and Sammy Sosa.

"Not a bad lineup, huh?" he said with a laugh.

With Carlos Beltran off the market, Ordonez said he feels like "the last one left" in the free-agent class of 2005. While that's not the case, Ordonez probably is the best outfielder available for a one-year deal, and the Cubs will pursue him if the price is right.

Speaking from his home, Ordonez said he's ready to work out for any team. Sources said the Cubs, Mets and Orioles have requested and received Ordonez's medical records, including reports concerning his knee surgery last summer.

But it probably will come down to the Cubs and the Orioles, two teams with holes in the outfield and room in the budget.

Ordonez insisted he was completely healthy.

"The doctors have cleared me," he said. "I'll be ready to play by spring training. Everybody will see.

"I'm pain-free and in better shape than ever now after rehabbing so long."

Ordonez's preference to remain in Chicago makes the Cubs his obvious first choice. General manager Jim Hendry has had preliminary talks with Ordonez's agent, Scott Boras.

i think so too. i think they are hurting with all of the losses and they should have some extra cash.

I see it being the cubs. The Mets are in a very enviable position over the cubs right now. They can bid against them for Maggs & they are the only real option for trading Sosa. So they can use that as leverage in the Sosa trade negotiations.

I think the cubs will meet the Mets price & trade Sosa for Floyd then sign Maggs. Their OF will be Floyd, Patterson, & Maggs.

Who cares if he ends up with the Cubs. In fact the Cubs are looking more and more like the 2000-2004 Sox. Waaaayyyy too many right handed power hitters. And we only went to the playoffs ONCE! and got swept. Yea i guess the Cubs have better pitching then we had during those days, but right handed power hitters always go in major slumps as we witnessed during that era, and how can pitchers win 2-0 all the time? So for all of you Sox fans who will be pissed if Maggs goes there, DONT be. It might look good op paper, but it only turns out to be dissapointing seasons.

Well I've never been a huge Maggs fan to begin with. I saw & read about too many games where he collected 5 or 6 rbi's in a blowout game. It's why I don't put much stock in the accumulated yearly stats any more. Any reliably good hitter can pound the ball against the weakest pitching in the majors. Sosa & Maggs excel at that.

Is it any coincidence that when Sosa & McGuire were battling for the HR title that year that the NLC had one of the worst staff era averages of any division in MLB?

I prefer guys who are low-key solid hitters like Thomas & Dye who have proven their ability to hit the best pitchers in MLB.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuup. That's what I've been trying to tell me Dodger fan friend for months now. He always says "but he hits .300 every year with 30/100+", and I have to explain to him yet again that a lot of his production comes from *meaningless* at bats (either up or down big late in games). I would have liked to have kept Magglio if the price were right, but that con artist Boras is probably going to be asking for $13-$15M a season for Magglio, and some sappy owner will probably give it to him. Very very risky for *not* that great of a player.

Still trying to gather info, Baltimore team doctors have begun conversations with one of the physicians who recently examined Magglio Ordonez.

As of now, the Orioles have not requested Ordonez to work out and have only spoken informally with agent Scott Boras. They will have interest in signing him to a multiyear deal if he shows he's healthy. Jan. 14 - 5:02 am et

I think it is in Maggs best interest to delay signing as long as possible to give the knee time to heal. I suspect we'll be reading small leaks about Maggs alowing teams to look over medical records, Maggs running for this team, whispers here and there until Late April or May.

I just don't see him wanting to sign for a couple more months.

I love it when you analyze, sometimes.

Oh and I think he goes AL to be a DH.
