Texsox
Basically a friend of mine mentioned for an upcoming summer project he wouldn't be hiring any kids who didn't have a conservative haircut. My son happens to have long hair. This guy was probably not thinking specifically about my son when he made the remark but I got pissed (gee big surprise from Tex) and told him off. These kids would be camp counselors for a month, earning sub minimum wage, living in crappy accomodations, eating mass cooked camp food, and putting up with 100+ degree heat. And he wants them to by little Jr. Republicans going off to a summer internship :headshake
EvilMonkey
Tex, not trying to start a fight, but did he say he wanted them to be 'junior republicans', or just that he didn't like funky haircuts? Yeah, camp counselor seems like a position where a hairstyle wouldn't matter much, unless maybe the kids attending came from more conservative families, and he thought THEY would have an aversion to long hair, mohawks, hair dyed blue, etc. I am just wondering if by his use of the term 'conservative' to describe hairstyles, you are reading too much into it. Maybe, maybe not. Just askin'.
WilliamTell
Junior is the key word here. Let the kids have fun, I'm only 19 and don't have long hair or anything, but at least they're going out and getting involved for the future. That's more than most of the kids around. I'm a republican also, but hair style shouldn't matter in this. But what do I know....

He also asked me to inform one of my assistants to remove his earing around the kids. I refused. He said "conservative hairstyles and dress" in the email. He has on two occasions specifically told my son he should cut his hair. My son passed his Eagle Scout board of review with that hair. The kids are coming from all over the area, mostly working poor to middle class. The resident camp costs $140 for the week. The camp has had declining enrollment each year because of the quality of the staff's instruction and the quality of the facilities and food. I have sat in literally dozens of meetings on why Units aren't using the facility for summer camp and the appearance of the camp staff has never been mentioned once. My son's hair is barely past his ears, not even near his shoulder, and not in his eyes except when wet. This guy wears his hair in a crew cut, has a full beard, and a big chew between the cheek and gum. (to his credit, never around the kids) The issue is more if someone says I won't hire anyone like this or that and this and that describes your child, would you be pissed? I'm taking a general comment and making it personal.

I recently cut all my hair off, but I was one of those long haired "freaks". Having long hair is kind of fun when you're a teenager, because when you're out in the real world and not rich, you'll probably need to have short hair. But some teenage job? C'mon. Texsox
The other thing that is ironic is one of the most respected volunteers wears a pony tail. I doubt he asked him to cut it. I had long hair in high school and college. In fact when I was running cross country if I didn't feel the cadence of my hair hitting my shoulder during the 880, I couldn't run. Kid Gleason
Speaking from a lifetime of experience. Well, considering that up until April my hair was down to my ass, and numerous times it was eggplant purple, and has been so for the past 20 years, I would be a little upset. But honestly, I never understood people who looked the way I did (and in similar styles) and got upset when peope would look at us weird, or discriminate against us. Seriously, I made myself look the way I did, and I knew I stood out like a sore thumb, and with the choice to look my own way, I knew I had to accept certain reactions, consequences, and situations. I have been in fights for my looks, I have been ridiculed for my looks and I have been turned down jobs for my looks. I, unlike people of certain races and creeds, could always do something to change the way the world percieved me, just by buying new clothes and by getting a haircut. But I wanted to walk a certain path, and people in this world want a certain look for their company, and I always understood that, and never fought it. My hair is now REALLY short, due to God thinking I would look better with A LOT of flesh exposed on top of my head. But I still don't always dress conservative, basically look like I fell out of a 50's "rebel teen flick". But now I have a pretty good job, but still don't question people who look at me a little weird. It's all cool.

I could give a damn what they look like, if they are kind hearted people then they are a-ok in my book. Of course like everyone else I still make judgements before knowing someone, I just try not to let those judgements get in my way. And if someone told me to cut my hair for a job I'd probably tell them to piss off.
Molto
I don't see a problem with it. Yeah, I can see your point. You have to keep in mind this Camp pays about $85 per week to the 16 year old staff, you live in cement open wall cells with a metal roof, string some hammocks and mosquito netting to sleep. No privacy. The staff was bad three years ago and down hill from there. Their approach is to have the kids cut their hair?? I agree it's probably a good lesson for the kids to learn, but at what expense? A well groomed, but incompetent staff?
Chisoxfn
I should just add I get lazy and I have two jobs. One I don't work too often, the other is more my full time job, and once I had my boss (at my part time job) tell me to shave and I basically said why and he listened. Its not like I have a thick beard (not that it would matter) but I tend to get lazy. But I always get my job done and am one of the harder workers and he agreed. I just get pissed when anyone tells me what to do to be honest
YASNY
If their targetted clientelle is "Jr. Republicans" then I can see why they'd want their employees to reflect that. But your buddy sounds a bit like George Steinbrenner to me. Not even close. It's the cheapest camp of this sort in Texas. I used Jr. Republicans trying to think of another youth group that would convey the image he's trying to get. Perhaps Mormom Missionaries may have set the image. Like I said these kids are going to net about $250 for the month. For that they will work Sunday through Saturday at the camp.

mreye
I'm kind of on the fence about this, Tex. Honestly, if I ran a camp, I'd probably be like this guy. I say this having no experience in trying to get people to work at a camp. IMHO, I think you overreacted a little, but as I know, when it comes to your children, it's very easy to overreact. This guy finished 1 in the state, and was just incredible. I watched him destroy the competition in the Regional meet. The only think that moved was his legs. He just floated once he got out of the blocks. My biggest thorn in the side was a fellow by the name of JC who beat me in our conference 880 by about 5 yards. He had a go out fast and burn everyone out strategy and I preferred the hang on the shoulder of a slow pace and kick. I gave him too much room and couldn't catch him. He also finished just ahead of me in the mile and in the county cross country meet. I wound up with a locker next to his in college
