qwerty
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jan 17, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) I dunno how does he fare against the AL Central?
Chisoxfn
I think the Sox are gonna wait and see what PK does early in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see PK sign an extension that keeps him here another 3 or 4 years. Kalapse
No to Giambi, I don't want that anywhere near the South Side.
Rex Kickass
I like the idea of having legacy players. Frank Thomas is here now 15 years? Konerko here for long term would be nice too.
DBAHO
QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 07:17 AM) Thomas is most likely a FA after this season. I believe Sox option for $10M or a $3M buyout something like that. Also Shingo only has 2 years of service time after this season, he is not even arbitration eligible. Does his age impact this? I guess Steff's copy of the CBA may be needed. It was a nice Konerko piece though. I think there's a player option for $10 million, and if that's rejected there's a $13 million team option (or it may be the other way around), so it's likely Thomas will still be here in 2006. JUGGERNAUT
I'm not so quick to just give up Giambi as you are. This guy was on a HOF pace before that news. If he can still play & the NYY's want Koney & are willing to pay most of Giambi's salary to get rid of him I say we do that trade.

Option and in 2006 has dual option: 10M player and 12M Team or 3.5M buyout- 2M in bonuses for a top 10 MVP finish.
JUGGERNAUT
As long as Thomas finishes near the top 10 in MVP the CWS will honor his 10M player option.

LDF
QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 05:59 PM) Going to be kind of hard when he misses the first 1/2 of the season. i said this several yrs ago and i am dusting it off again for this yr. what is the value of a player who lets say bats around the 260 range, hits 20-30 homers and drives in something like 85-100 rbi's. is he worth 10 mil

Koney, & Rowand have spoken about it at Soxfest. They realize that a Thomas ab is worth double the value of any other player on the team. I do not agree with Ozzie's opinion. So far he's been a real loose cannon with the mouth. Trashing Lee like that at Soxfest. The trainers believe Thomas has an outside chance of being ready by the start of the season. That tells me that May is much more likely than Jun for Thomas to play. The cast is off. He is working as hard as possible on strength & conditioning. I would take the glass half full approach here. aboz56
I know I talked with Jason and others about this at the Fest and I think a good deal for Paul would be 4 yrs/36-40 million. If you put that out to Konerko, I think he takes it and we'll have a very good first baseman for years to come and someone who is the "face" of our team. LDF
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 18, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) You are completely ignoring his OBP impact. Koney, & Rowand have spoken about it at Soxfest. They realize that a Thomas ab is worth double the value of any other player on the team. i should have made my point a clearer, i am a big frank backer and several yrs ago i went against the majority here and said that frank is worth bringing back. granted he may not hit in the 300 range, but if you look at what players are making, was it worth the money they are spending on him to bring him back. yes. and yes to the 10 mil contract. so let me say this again, how much is a worth if he hit lets say around the 260 range, hits 20-30 homers and drives in something like 85-100 rbi's. CanOfCorn
For those of you that can get to ESPN's Rumor Mill...Paul Konerko looks an awful lot like Magglio Ordonez.

JUGGERNAUT
No, he gets two million in bonuses for a top ten finish in the mvp voting. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If Thomas has a near top 10 MVP season the Sox will not buy out that last year & Thomas will not opt for FA. The media pressure will be to great to retain Thomas. In this scenario, Thomas will play for the Sox in 06 for a 10M base. With the loss of Maggs I'm likewise beginning to think the Sox are leaning towards keeping Thomas as a lifer. His contracts have been more than reasonable to date & his cost vs performance has been well above average including the injuries. Keeping Thomas as a lifer almost guarantees a boost in attendance in his final year. Especially if he's put up #'s making him a consensus first ballot HOFer. He's pretty close to that. That's a marketing icon that a team doesn't just give up easily. The best case scenario would be for the Sox to treat Thomas like Seattle treated Edgar.
