You have to admit,

.262/.343/.323, cheap w/ good defense at 2B  looks better than

.246/.285/.338, $1M w/ poor range and a plus arm in the outfield.

One is almost universally loathed, and looks to be done with this team, the other is a beloved mascot of ineptitude.

Not to mention Willie plays a much better CF and even LF. But Timo did hit that clutch HR.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 02:26 AM)
KW will have a little time to either make a deal or make the decision.  I'm thinking a Harris trade may be in the works.

For what, though?

We don't have any other needs, besides a MIF that can play multiple positions.

If Kenny were to trade Harris for just a utility guy, it would be pointless, and a bad trade. He could trade for a solid prospect, but is anyone going to give up a solid prospect?

Jim -- just, let me think for a second. You said that if Iguchi fails, Uribe is his backup, correct? But, you've also said that if Uribe fails, we don't have a backup plan -- which is why we cannot keep Harris on the 25 man, correct?

But -- who is a better SS out there currently, than is better than Harris is at second? I know that sounds wierd, and let me try to better put out what I'm trying to say.

Harris is already a decent second baseman. Who out there would be a better SS, a better value as a backup SS, than Harris is as a backup 2Bman/OFer?

It's my thinking that Uribe cannot fail -- he can't -- if he fails, well, I won't say we're screwed, but that might cause some problems. Really, no one will make a good replacement SS. Our eggs are firmly placed in one basket at SS -- and that's OK, I have no problem with that, considering we should be getting offensive production elsewhere, and as long as Uribe continues with his defensive expertise (sp?), as long as he hits .230+, I'll be OK (that being said, I doubt he goes that low).

Larkin is the only guy who I'd be willing to replace Harris' spot with, and he doesn't want to come here as a part time player, which is what he'd be (IMHO -- and I know my opinion differs from yours in thinking that he'd be getting 90+ games here).

Is it just me or does willie look lost in the outfield? He cannot get reads on a ball to save his life.

...and he still plays a better CF then Timo... :lolhitting

Seriously though Willie would learn the position the more he's out there. Timo isn't going to suddenly develop range.

I'm in the trade Willie crowd only because although I'd rather see Timo be the one gone I doubt KW would trade him.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 08:04 PM)
There are a few guys from the 40-man roster that could be designated for assignment to make room for Iguchi...

Pedro Lopez

Paulino Reynoso

Matt Smith

Sean Tracey

I doubt anyone would claim these guys.

I would almost guarentee you that 3 of those 4 guys would get claimed in a heartbeat.

Jesus Christ. :headshake :headshake :headshake

You do realize Timo had 8 assists and 4 DP's in only 615 innings last season don't you?

Jeckle, your insane bias towards Garland and Harris is really getting creepy and annoying.

And that makes Harris the better defensive player? I didn't think so either.

People, he put up those s*** numbers because he was used in an everday role!!!!! Take a look at his BA with runners in scoring postion. I have no problem with Timo being a bench player this year.

Good grief.

Ugh, I didn't want to get into this argument again but why not, I guess we can just throw out the game tying single in the 9th against cleveland with 2 outs, or the 2 run homer in the 9th against the marlins that tied it up, or the 3 run single against krod in the 8th that tied it up, or how about in that same series in the 8th without 2 outs against anaheim that he hit a single between short and 3rd to tie it up or how about the bunt up in minny in the 7th or 8th(can't remember) with the bases loaded that tied the game up and I can go on, you honestly have to throw the stats out the window with timo he comes up big when you need him to.

Or when he threw out Bret Boone to end the game that Baj and Shingo nearly threw away, or his antics on the basepaths against Carlos Zambrano. Let's just look at his numbers from last year where he was an everday starter for half the season considering he's going to be a bench player this year. Makes sense to me! :rolly

His antics on the basepaths against Zambrano gave us 2 runs. Remember Crede hit a HR after Zambrano throwing over 9823983298 times.

Timo is gonna be on the team this year.

He is not worth the $1 mill he is going to get though. He would have been lucky to make another team's 25-man, quite honestly.

DFA'ing him and giving him a NRI to ST(how do you like that for abbreviations? :D ) would have been great, and would have allowed us to make that move if we really wanted to.

Back to the 40-man roster question...Grilli is still on the 40-man. I would like KW and the Sox to give me 1 good reason why.

I like your thinking Wite... There are only a handful of teams that would bother claiming Grilli, and I don't know who has room.  This is exactly the time of year where he would slip through without any problem.

Didn't the Padres try to do the same thing with Darrell May after they traded him. I think they designated him for assignment, and nobody would claim him from wavers, because of the salary was on. Not saying it's similar to Grilli, because of the different salaries, but I'm struggling to see a team who would go after Grilli too and claim him.

You can throw all the numbers at me you want to. The fact is that he has no range. He has the ugliest fielding style in the MLB.

Second he had those stats in RF mostly... not CF... my statement was that Willie was a better CF then Timo, not RF. IMO Willie can only get better then longer they put him out there. However Timo isn't going to suddenly develop range.

I don't have a Bias towards Harris or Garland. Forgive me if I don't see how Garland sucks so bad. I mean if he keeps up and this 12 win pace by the time he's a free agent somebody is going to offer him a Kris Benson like deal. I don't see how 3.5 Mil is so bad compared to what other pitchers are getting. As for Harris yes I thought he would have been a solid starting 2B, however now that he's not i'd rather see him traded for a UIF. I would want Perez traded instead but it would never happen.
