According to today's Sun Times, the Tigers have an offer of 5 years, 55 mil. for Maggs on the table. Get this, Boras wants more years.  Is that town gonna crucify their GM or what?

Anyone know any more about this?

Wow. That's about all I can say; wow.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall during those negotiations.

Regardless of how people might feel about Boras, you have to admit, the guy gets the loot.

I feel sick. :puke See? Dombrowski is an idiot if he does this. So is Ilitch. I hope when the collective bargaining agreement is up they don't invite these two jokers or Fred Wilpon to the table. The might just pull a JR/Albert Belle.

:o WOW.

Agreed. He's just doing his job.

He should be in Vegas on a double ticket with David Copperfield.

"Watch me pull a fat contract out of my hat."

I think he's a hypnotist. "Mr. Dombrowski, when I snap my fingers, you will awaken and see Magglio Ordonez as a player on caliber with Alex Rodriguez. You will forget all about his injured knee. You will offer a contract worth $5 million over 5 years. You will then hear my counter offer of 5/$70 million, accept it, and feel a great sense of accomplishment. Oh yeah, and you will go out to center field and act like a chicken after every home win." SNAP!

Actually the more I think about it the more I think the Tigers are the best place for Maggs. I fully believe he will spend the majority of his time DHing this year. He might end up being an Edgar Martinez like player. He couldn't do that on an NL team. Still i'm in shock that they made him that offer and as greedy and selfish as Maggs has become he was stupid enough to turn it down.

I'd howl with delight if the Tiger's just pulled it of the table.

Boras is insane.

The Tigers and agent Scott Boras continued to discuss Magglio Ordonez yesterday. The two sides are close on dollars, the Detroit Free Press reports.

While the salary might be right -- $11 million-$12 million per seasons -- the years still aren't. Boras wants seven and the Tigers are offering five. With the Sammy Sosa acquisition taking the Orioles out of the mix and the Rangers' interest cooling, five years could be enough. The Cubs could choose to get involved with Sosa out of the way, but indications are that they're going in a different direction. Jan. 29 - 3:54 am et

If Mags plays near his usual level 5 years $55 is a steal for the Tigers.

I'm not a Doctor, so I will not assume to know just how bad his knee is.

I guess opinions vary. I don't see Maggs at a bargain at $11 million per for 5 years with his regular production. Maggs is a great hitter, but he isn't a 50 HR guy, nor a huge OBP guy along with his power, he is an average OF and doesn't run particularly well.

Perhaps $11 mil per is the top of the salary bracket in which he belongs, but I just can't see him being a bargain at that level or making that great of a percentage of a team's overall payroll.

Maggs should trust his agent who has more experience in this sort of thing. If any player was more experienced in negotiations than their agents, why hire one? I would also be surprised if these accounts were accurate and that the Tigers were the ones the leak was targeted to. Boras just set the starting point for any other team that is interested.
