YASNY
I hope he clears and is resigned to a minor league deal. I don't think we saw a completely healthy Grilli last year. I'd like to see what he can do (in Charlotte) for 2005.

I'm sorry but I don't think Grilli has a place here. Ohh well maybe i'm wrong.
GoodAsGould
jeckle a minor leaguer, hell anyone has bad years. B4 his surgery Grilli was a higher prospect i think he was a pretty high up draft pick. So if he could get his arm back in shape he still has the ability to be a decent ball player. I like diaz too but when he started he didnt show much either.

The thing that scares me about Diaz is that he is a two pitch pitcher, and neither one of his pitches are that great. I like haveing Grilli around JIC. Grilli didn't perform well last year, but the guy has some raw talent. Again, I'd like to see what he can do when completely healthy. I like diaz too but when he started he didnt show much either. Jason Grilli was the No. 1 draft choice (4th overall) of the San Francisco Giants in 1997. KW shows inordinate love for failed No 1's, see Davis, Borchard.

Rowand44
QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 06:20 PM) Why? Because I think Jason is a better starting pitcher then Felix is, I'm not saying I want to get rid of Felix, I'm just saying Jason is a better emergency starter, imo. Felix might be useful some day if he brings his control with him from aaa but if he's not pin point he's going to have some problems, cause he has 0 movement on his fastball. Felix might be useful some day if he brings his control with him from aaa but if he's not pin point he's going to have some problems, cause he has 0 movement on his fastball. But see, that's the thing. One doesn't just lose control, and at AAA Charlotte, Diaz had awesome control -- 2004 B-Mac like control, IIRC. One might have the jitters for a while, but one doesn't just lose control -- unless it's after a surgery, or in changing your throwing motion. GeneHC and I (Gene, I hope you're still in this boat... ) still maintain that Felix can still make it as a real solid number 3-4 starter. He's got good control, he can locate the pitches that he throws, and he mixes it up well (at least -- when I saw him when he was on, so-to-speak). Sure, he doesn't bring the heat, but he can still be a good pitcher. With our one-two pitchers locked up for a while -- as well as our threes and fours locked up through '06 -- Felix might be able to serve as our number five in 2007, with (hopefully) B-Mac and someone else (Garland, FA brought in, Tracey) in front of him. Wow, am I doof or what -- looking ahead to 2007... :banghead

Wow, am I doof or what -- looking ahead to 2007... :banghead If you're a doof then I am too, I think a lot of us have looked a couple years ahead, kinda something to think about before the season starts and nothing is going on. I think diaz has a chance to be a 5th starter in this league and I've said that before because of his control. He didn't show his pinpoint control when he was brought up last year and the problem I have with his fastball is not how fast he throws it, it's just straight as an arrow, the ball just doesn't move, as of right now I maintain I think Grilli gives us a better option in the rotation then Diaz would but if Felix would learn to throw in the majors then maybe he would give us a better chance. On the other hand Grilli has some pretty good stuff so if he could learn to locate better then he could be a decent option, either way lets hope we don't have to worry about this during the season
DBAHO
IIRC, 2005 will be 2 seasons after Grilli had major arm surgery, and he'll be able to pitch up to 96 MPH on his fastball. Pitchers in the past have had success coming back at this period, like Jon Lieber for example.

I agree with what you said, but Grilli's never been there to come back to, as far as being a good major league pitcher. However, because he got injured fairly young, he just may become a quality arm now that he's healthy.

Guest JimH
They have 10 days from what, last Thursday to do something with him. So I'd expect to hear something late this week or early next. I am in the big time minority here but I hope they can get him signed to a minor league deal. He was not that good (wild) for much of the year and at the beginning he wasn't healthy, did not have his velo. Even his wife said he wasn't all the way back, met her in Tucson. That game he threw vs. Detroit really stuck in my mind, I watched him very closely. I realize one game is not the be all end all. But this guy is not afraid, he is a bulldog. Granted it was Detroit but they couldn't touch him, his fastball was live, the slider nasty and the offspeed stuff did the job. Big plus ... he throws inside. Sox need more guys like that. Grilli doesn't give in. I know most here hate this guy but I hope they work out a deal to keep him. He is starting pitching insurance. I like Grilli's stuff and as of right now I think he's a better starting pitcher then Felix is and I've been saying that for quite a while. As you mentioned he hasn't been completely healthy and that allows for some loss of velocity, however when you're not fully healthy sometimes you don't have the control you'd normally have. Jason's fastball has some life to it and if he can locate a bit better I don't think he's that bad, either way he'd provide some depth as a starting pitcher, imo.
