You know what's really upsetting? It's becoming more difficult to isolate Chicago Cubs' players I dislike. Sure, Messiah and Dusty usually offer us some laughter, but Moises Alou and (especially) Sosa were lightning rods for criticism. I'll miss the potential for mayem those two offered Sox fans following every loss.

Looks like I'll have to grudgingly concentrate my hatred towards Hawkins and Zambrano....

The Cubs are supposedly getting Hairston and 2 to 4 minor leaguers. Here's my hunch...

The Cubs will trade Hairston + prospect(s) to the Oakland A's for Octavio Dotel and also trade prospect(s) to the Washington Nationals for Terrmel Sledge. Dotel will be their closer and Sledge will be their corner outfielder.

This is from a Cubune article about the potential deal.

While Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, Baker and Cubs players insisted at last week's Cubs convention that Sosa's presence wouldn't be a disruption to the team, fans weren't buying it. When his image appeared on a video, there was a loud chorus of boos.

I find it very interesting that this was not mentioned (as far as I know) in all the Cub Converntion coverage. Then again, I could have missed it because I skip about 90% of the articles about the Cubs. However, I do know this. The Cubune had photo galleries from each of Soxfest and Cub Convention. The Sox had 10 photos, while there were 16 in the Cub gallery. Not b****ing, because it's expected. But I thought it was noteworthy, at least.

This was reported by the local Chicago media. Especially on The Score and ESPN 1000.

I was just browsing the cubs MLB board.

Gotta love those Cubbie fans. It's not good enough to just get rid of Sosa. They are convinced they are getting a closer and turning around and getting Huff in this deal as well. I think I need to buy a case of beer and chug it as fast as I can so I can understand this on their level...

So far what i have heard from orioles hangout it is hairston, crouthers and fontenot. Crouthers and fontenot are two of their top ten prospects.

Then you gotta give Hendry his props. This guy could probably sell sand to an Arab.

I saw that as well. Fontenot has some pretty impressive minor league numbers...

Mike Fontenot

Dave Crouthers

But I will puke if they are able to swing another trade for Aubrey Huff.

MWAHAHAHA!!! Burnitz could be the Cubs' starting RF'er in 2005...

"Deal shows just how far slugger has fallen"

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...ack=2&cset=true

When the Cubs play their home opener at Wrigley Field, the guy running out to greet the fans in right field is likely to be Jeromy Burnitz. He might want to make sure he's wearing the proper uniform, as this would be his fifth team in the last five seasons.

Burnitz? Huh?

He's still a free agent, but a source indicated the Cubs passed on having outfielder Jay Gibbons included in the pending deal with Baltimore because they are close to signing a free-agent outfielder.

That is not going to be Magglio Ordonez, whom the Detroit Tigers reportedly have offered at least $55 million over five years.

"If that is true, and it probably is, it might be the craziest signing in years," one baseball executive said.

The Cubs are many things, but crazy is not among them. So with Ordonez having joined Carlos Beltran in the group of players general manager Jim Hendry likes but doesn't have to have, they appear close to signing Burnitz, who has not been able to scare up much interest despite hitting 30-plus homers in six of the last seven seasons.

Could you ever conceive of the Cubs paying a team to take Sosa off their hands and then signing a drifter like Burnitz to replace him? In a year when they are shooting for the World Series, no less?

No, you couldn't. But that is how far the mighty Sosa has fallen.

By the way, read the whole article. The above is just an excerpt. Phil Rogers must have just written this article up because it is labeled as "January 29, 2005".

OH HAPPY DAY!!!

If this deal goes down I'm convinced that Hendry and Baker determined there was no possibility of Sosa working in Chicago in '05.... There options are so limited in the outfield now that Maggs is getting a multi-year offer from the Tigers...

I would assume Hendry has other deals in place, even beyond a Burnitz signing because adding Hariston Jr. and Burnitz doesn't really make them a stronger team than with Sosa.

Maybe they will sign Burnitz to replace Sham-Me in RF and trade Hairston + prospect(s) to the A's for Octavio Dotel since they still need a closer. And they will just platoon Hollandsworth and Dubois in LF.

if they some how get julio and prospects and then use those prospects to get Huff in essence getting a better RF and a closer.  Ill call hendry a magician.

i also heard sosa is willing to void his option year which makes things easier.

ESPN is reporting that Julio is not included in the trade. It's Sosa for Hairston and 2 to 4 minor leaguers.

is any sox fan watching this trade develope, and just sitting there grinning/trying to keep self from bursting out laughing? they trading away sosa for a second basemen? ( can he play right?) and two minor leagures. cubs outfeild:

left: dubois center: patterson right: hollansworth. this is great without sosa they lookse the presance that he carried with him, much like frank does with the sox,the presence of thought that this guy could be down 0-2 and then smack one of the longest homers you've ever seen, and now he gone on the northside

(pending a physical), and i get the idea that this could be a real good year.

You need a dose of reality if you think Hendry is going to open the season with that outfield. Once the Sosa trade is done, Hendry will start his own flurry of activity. Book it.

The only bad thing for Hendry is that he has no more sucker trade bait left.

Even Farnsworth has some explainable upside to fool another club into trading for his loony ass.

Otherwise, Hendry's gonna finally have to start dealing his prize prospects if he wants value in return. If he ever had to deal Angel Guzman, I think he'd cry himself to sleep and wet his pants.

all of the outfielders left to get are not to good and Maggs will most likely be a tiger, Burnitz isn't a consistent hitter at all and hes really old, don't know why the cubs would want him nor do i care

I give Hendry credit for dumping Sosa, and getting some talent in return. Hairston's a better leadoff hitter than PAtterson, and could fill an OF spot. But they still have a hole in either LF or RF.

Carl Everett anyone?! Do they have anyone the sox could use? Prob. not.

Just wait and see what that Cubbie outfield looks like come opening day. It won't be anything to laugh at, I guaran-damn-tee it.

Hendry will assemble a very competitive club come August; just you wait.

I think he made one hell of a deal here with Sosa. I'm sure he would have taken anything he could get, but held out and got some guys that can contribute to the club for the next few years.

Good deal for Hendry; real good deal.

Now, look for the finishing pieces of the puzzle to fall into place over the next few weeks.

hairston can play all OF spots so if they indeed get him that would help. I know on some reports it says Julio wont be included but ive heard in some that he will and you really never know. So way i look at it if they add Julio and Huff and only lose prospects and Sosa than the cubs offseason grade has to be an A.
