AddisonStSox
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 10:55 AM) hairston can play all OF spots so if they indeed get him that would help. I know on some reports it says Julio wont be included but ive heard in some that he will and you really never know. So way i look at it if they add Julio and Huff and only lose prospects and Sosa than the cubs offseason grade has to be an A. Julio is not included. MLB reports its Sosa for Harriston and two prospects, pending the waive of Sammy's no-trade clause and physicals. Hendry was Julio was in the deal. Punch and Judy Garland
For what it's worth, Hendry is an outstanding GM. I think I'd rank the top 5 gms in the league this way: 1. Larry Beinfest 2. Terry Ryan 3. Brian Sabean 4. John Schuerholz 5. Jim Hendry I'm still baffled about how good of a job he did getting Nomar last year. As for the Sox fan who was down in the dumps about the lightning rods being gone-I know what you mean., This is compunded by the exit of Chip who could turn Cal Ripken into a heel with just his announcing. However, I think Dusty, Prior, WOod, and Zambrano will fill those shows nicely.
GoodAsGould
yeah hendry really works good deals, the aramis ramirez one, nomar, and now this if he gets Huff he is amazing.
Punch and Judy Garland
they lose a bad clubhouse guy though. I think it had to be done. Will Sosa really not interfere with Miggy Tejada though? It's his team.

It's his team. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Supposedly, Sham-Me and Tejada are good friends. Both are from the Dominican and it's one of the reasons Sham-Me will waive his no-trade clause. It's obvious that Sham-Me wants out of Chicago and away from all the boos. May as well go to a team where he has a good friend and can hit #600. YASNY
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) A source told the Chicago Tribune that the Cubs were close to signing Jeromy Burnitz to replace Sammy Sosa in right field. If that's the case, then the Cubs are clearly a worse team than they were yesterday. Jerry Hairston Jr. can be an asset, but he probably won't be used at second base over Todd Walker and he's not a good enough hitter to be a quality left fielder. Roto This is definitely and "addition by subtraction" type deal. The Cubs are better without Sosa than with him. He's been their problem for the past 6 years. Ever since the Cubs front office did not stand behind Don Baylor in that first spring training flap he had with Sosa, Sammy's been a hindrance to any chance the Cubs had at winning. LDF
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) Hendry will assemble a very competitive club come August; just you wait. I think he made one hell of a deal here with Sosa. I'm sure he would have taken anything he could get, but held out and got some guys that can contribute to the club for the next few years. Good deal for Hendry; real good deal. Now, look for the finishing pieces of the puzzle to fall into place over the next few weeks. i heard on espn that the prospects the sCrubs got were nothing but fringe prospects. has anyone heard of the names yet
CWSGuy406
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 03:44 PM) I give Hendry credit for dumping Sosa, and getting some talent in return. Hairston's a better leadoff hitter than PAtterson, and could fill an OF spot. But they still have a hole in either LF or RF. Carl Everett anyone?! Do they have anyone the sox could use? Prob. not. I know it's been mentioned around here before, but I'd take Kyle Farnsworth off their hands in a heartbeat... For what it's worth, Hendry is an outstanding GM. I think I'd rank the top 5 gms in the league this way: 1. Larry Beinfest 2. Terry Ryan 3. Brian Sabean 4. John Schuerholz 5. Jim Hendry Wait -- you don't even have Epstien up there? I realize he has a lot of money to work with, but he sure as hell makes good use of every penny he's given. Also, isn't Sabean the Giants GM? What has he done to warrant the number three? All he's done is signed a bunch of old guys (Alou, Grissom, Vizquel -- three years for Vizquel, ugh), and he has the most dangerous hitter in baseball to work with, and still hasn't won a WS... Jordan4life_2007
I'll be extremely pissed off if they land Huff. Why would the Rays wanna trade him anyway? He's a very solid player who's cheap at the moment. I hope the Slubs end up with Burnitz, that would be too funny.
qwerty
One player in the Sammy Sosa deal isn't scheduled to take his physical until Wednesday, so the trade won't be official before midweek. MLB approval is also needed. Eventually, Jerry Hairston Jr., David Crouthers and Mike Fontenot will be sent from Baltimore to Chicago in exchange for Sosa and cash. The New York Times is reporting that the Cubs will pay $12 million of the $21.5 million Sosa is still owed ($17 million in salary and a $4.5 million buyout for 2006). Jan. 30 - 3:37 am et The Pirates have offered Jeromy Burnitz a one-year deal worth about $4 million, but they're less optimistic about signing him with the Cubs involved. Agent Howard Simon said Saturday that Burnitz is ''getting close'' to making a decision. ''Jeromy is picky,'' Simon said. ''He has some financial security. He's played some great baseball to this point in his career, but he's never really had the chance to play on a contender. For a competitive guy like that, it has some importance.'' That can't be good for Pittsburgh. Jan. 30 - 3:48 am et

Dick Allen
There was a mention in one article I read where a scout ran into Sosa this off season and said he barely recognized him, that he must have lost at least 35 lbs. How accurate this is is anyone's guess, the rumors about Uribe being huge weren't accurate, but if it is true, and Angelos being a stickler on physicals, Sosa may not pass. qwerty
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles will attempt to sign Sammy Sosa to a two-year extension after trading for him. Dealing for Sosa isn't a bad idea. Signing him to an extension before he even puts on a uniform would show that the team is more concerned about attendence than winning. At the rate he's going now, Sosa is well on his way to being nothing more than an average regular. Jan. 30 - 3:26 pm et
qwerty
The name du jour for the Cubs seems to be Tampa Bay outfielder Aubrey Huff. Devil Rays GM Chuck LaMar has a reputation as somebody who is difficult to trade with, and he may start the conversation by asking for Carlos Zambrano, the Cubs' young pitching star. The Cubs will say no before offering a more reasonable package from their standpoint. Other names in the news have been Cincinnati's Austin Kearns, whom Hendry likes a lot. His asking price also might be too high. Minnesota's Jacque Jones has drawn some interest from the Cubs, but not a whole lot.
santo=dorf
Talk has persisted all winter that Sosa is notably slimmer — "He has lost at least 35 pounds," says one scout who bumped into Sosa in the Dominican. "I hardly recognized him." Sosa's associates scoff at talk of the Incredible Shrinking Sammy. Truth is, he probably could stand to lose a few pounds, anyway. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/3362128 :sosasucks

AddisonStSox
My baseball source in Minny said the Cubs have shown tons of interest in Jones. I've been reporting this for two months now. If the Twinks agree to terms with Santana for a one year deal (or more), Jones will be gone. However, I think they'd dish him without re-signing Santana as well.
