I never really did any of that stuff (sneaking into bars) until I was 19ish, and then I somehow was always the DD. I had my own apartment so most of the time my friends and I hung out there. I never had troubles with cops but I know plenty who did. It also helped that I went to St Xavier, didn't live on campus, and had a near full time job.
