FlaSoxxJim
QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 18, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) And, so we should just turn away and not hold them to any kind of human rights standards? :rolly No, they and everybody else should be held to a basic standard of human rights. Of course the American take is that it should apply to everybody BUT US. I played along and I answered your question, so please do the same here. Where was OUR concern for human rights was when we provided Iraq with critical battle planning assistance AND the WMDs when we knew they were going to be used in decisive battles of the Iran-Iraq war? Where was OUR respect for the Geneva prohibitions in place against such weapons? Obviously our actions - knowing the weapons WOULD BE USED -made us complicit and in direct violation, specifically, of the 'Geneva Protocol for the Prohibition of the Use in War of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases, and of Bacteriological Methods of Warfare,' signed on 17 June 1925. The US... covertly aiding and abetting state-sponsored terror? You betcha' - we wrote the book. I obviously don't have to tell you that we flat out stink in protecting the human rights of all of our current and recent Iraqi and Afghan detainees, as a new information on the situation continues to come to light. It's all well and good to talk a good game on the subject of respecting and protecting human rights, but it's just lip-service if you don't walk it like you talk it. KipWellsFan
To back up what Jim is talking about New allegations of prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers I doubted that abuse was confined to Abu Ghraib but I guess there's no real proof here yet. flippedoutpunk
im not going to come up in here and say that im smarter than any of you or anything like that, but the thing that keeps getting me is the constant posting of everyday happenings in iraq. Last time i checked this was a war and it is expected that people die unfortunately. it sure would look nice if there was a week where no one died but this war isnt being fought in candyland. But if posting death statistics is your thing, post away.

FlaSoxxJim
It would be something if Allawi holds on to the PM after his party finished a distant third in the election. Not that al-Jaafari is the answer, but if he got the gig and then moved toward an Islamist state it would be irksome to many. And not that I think Chalabi would have been the answer before dropping out the other day. Boy, that would make American/Iraq relations interesting. At any rate, the way I understand it, the President and two VPs have to be chosen by the elected national assembly, and then those three have to unanimously decide who the PM should be.
