SoxFan562004
Mods, if you want to merge this with the othe threads please do, I just think this may deserve its own thread. KW is now getting 100% of my support on the Maggs situation. -Maggs and his agent themselves are saying he will be 75-80% at the start of spring training. (Seems to contradict what he said about his health about a month ago) -NOBODY has seen him work out, including the Tigers -All the Tigers have seen is Alan Trammel (SP?) viewing Maggs run. This running does not include jumping or sliding. -He was only cleared for "baseball related activity" a few weeks ago.

southsider2k5
$75 million sight unseen. Mike Illitch has just passed Tom Hicks for the dumbest SOB to own a baseball team.
beck72
After reading the particulars of the Det. deal, they aren't as foolish as they might seem. They are only on the hook for $6 mill in 2005. If Maggs misses more than 25 games due to his knee, the Tigers can void the deal. The $6 mill bonus would then kick in Nov. 2005 if they retained him. For the Tigers who have had trouble getting players to come play for them, it is a calculated risk they could afford. But few other teams were biting on MAggs for anything more than a 1, 2 yr incentive deal at best. Yet the Sox were in the right on this one. Maggs' b****ing that KW hyped his injury is pure BS. That Maggs isn't healthy yet is all the proof anyone needs
DBAHO
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:01 AM) $75 million sight unseen. Mike Illitch has just passed Tom Hicks for the dumbest SOB to own a baseball team. When I read that Dave Dombrowski wasn't really in favor of the deal as much as Illich (read Phil Rogers latest column), that said it all for me. Detroit didn't even have to overpay, but they just couldn't wait.
Dick Allen
Is Bruce Levine reporting this. The same Bruce Levine who just last week said the 5 year offer Detroit made to Magglio was BS? What matters is if he's ready to play when the season starts, not what his status is right at this moment. The White Sox weren't wrong in letting him go. If you look at it, his status is about the same as Frank Thomas, who is owed an $8 million salary + a $3.5 million buyout for a total of $11.5 million, and I'm sure he's not cleared for any baseball activity right now. Frank's foot/ankle has to be as big of concern for the White Sox as Magglio's knee is for Detroit.

With Frank, it could be his last season here, and I don't think at his age, he'd want to rush back from injury to jeopardise his future. Especially when you figure that for a whole lot less money up front, they could have had Carlos Beltran who would have looked real good in that giagantic CF of Comerica Park. Remember $34 million of his deal is deferred, so he is actually making less money during his 7 year deal than Maggs would. http://mets.mostvaluablenetwork.com/index.php?p=

WHITESOXRANDY
Ordonez isn't worth that much healthy. He doesn't bring people to the park and fill the seats like Sosa or some players - the Sox attendance still lagged with him. He doesn't lead his team to championships. The Sox made the playoffs once in hois 8 years. When he was in the playoffs, he did nothing - unlike Beltran who raised his level of play when it mattered most. He plays RF . The only easier positions to fill are LF and First base. He is not a switch hitter or lefty. It's easiest to find RH hitters. He is not a base stealer. Etc. Whats even more interesting to me is Maggs geting upset that the sox didn't offer him arbitration. What an asswipe. The guy just got cleared to run and we were suppose to offer this maggot arbitration. Why? Because he was a whitesox. Total crap. Let the tigers ahve him. I would be shocked if he is ever the same. In the long run I think the Sox will be proven they did the right thing.
SuperSteve
I think the Tigers did a nice job on the first year of the contract then (although after year one looks like trash).

Melissa1334
the tigers are a bunch of morons. why the hell would they sign an injured maggs ordonez? last time i heard they have a whole bunch of outfielders. they could have used a staring pitcher. with the money they are investing in maggs they could have gotten any starting pitcher that was available. they need pitching, especially in the bullpen. since they lost out on all the other big time FA's they signed maggs just to make a splash, not cuz they needed him. The $6 mill bonus would then kick in Nov. 2005 if they retained him. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The 25 gm clause applies to each year of the contract. So if they choose not to void it in 06 & he goes down they can still void it for 07. That's a smart move. Illich basically secured Maggs for a full season at 6M to fully evaluate his condition. Who controls whether Maggs plays? The Tigs. The clause is not open for debate. The Tigs can sit him any time they want if they feel the knee is not up to snuff. They control their own fate. When you consider signing bonuses for draft choices these days that's not unreasonable at all. The Tigs were prepared to go to battle in 05 w/out Maggs so the need for him to play is not great. He's an upgrade over what they were going with. Illich is a fool for caving to BorASS bluffs & up'g it to a 7 yr deal. He was bidding against himself. But again why should Illich care as long as the league is plush with stupid owners who won't hesitate to trade for Maggs if he puts up a good year? Just look at how Hicks got out of the A-Rod deal. Who really believes that Beltran, Beltre, Delgado are going to play out the length of their entire contracts with the team that signed them. It's a joke. The owners preach fiscal responsibility but rarely practice it. The fact remains that prior to this knee condition Maggs was a lock for 30/100/300 every year he played. Det has little risk with this contract & that condition. The likelihood of it hurting them in the future is small. As long as Maggs continues to put up 30/100/300 like numbers each year Det will have more than enough suitors to dump the contract on. I can't see how you can call Illich dumb for this move. CWSGuy406
QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 8, 2005 -> 03:40 PM) ANd if Mags puts up numbers like he has in the past.. who is the dumb one? Oh come on Anthrax, quit playing these f***ing games. Even you know a healthy Maggs isn't worth 15 million, much less a Maggs with a gimp and degenerative knee. You may disagree with Maggs replacement, but surely even you can see that not having Maggs on the books for the next couple of seasons, especially with that knee, is a good thing.
