Chisoxfn Posted April 9, 2003 Share Posted April 9, 2003 Recap: Sox Win in Ten Innings By Mario Scalise April 8, 2003 SoxNet.net Jose Valentin just keeps on coming up big for the White Sox, this time with a 10th inning game-winning RBI-single as the Sox beat the Indians 5-3 on Tuesday. That was Valentin's only hit of the game, but that was good for his team-leading sixth RBI. Starter Bartolo Colon lasted six innings on 109 pitches and received a no decision. Colon gave up two runs, allowed six hits, walked three and struck out six. He is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA on the season. The two runs came in the second and fifth. The first coming off a one out, fielder's choice grounder by Brandon Phillips with the bases loaded. Colon struck out Milton Bradley to end the inning. Sandy Alomar tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth with his first of three hits, double, scoring Joe Crede. Alomar drove in another run in the seventh off a double, once again scoring Crede to tie the game at 2-2. D'Angelo Jimenez then drove in Alomar with a single, putting the Sox up 3-2. That lead lasted till Cleveland's half of the inning, as reliever Tom Gordon, with the help of Paul Konerko's defense, gave up an Omar Vizquel RBI-double passed Konerko at first. Gordon recorded two outs before the run and left after for Damaso Marte, who struck out Matt Lawton to end the inning. Marte went on to throw a clean eighth inning before getting replaced with no outs and one man on in the ninth. Billy Koch pitched scoreless' ninth and 10th innings to pick up the win. Alomar and Jimenez singled and walked respectively before Valentin's double and Frank Thomas' sacrifice fly put the Sox up 5-3. Crede went 2-4 with two runs scored. The Sox 4-5-6 hitters (Magglio Ordonez, Konerko and Carlos Lee) went a combined 1-12. The game, which was a makeup of Monday's cancellation, was played in front of an opening day crowd of 42,301 at Jacobs Field. Game two of the three-game set will be on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. CT.
