That's putting it in a nutshell.

Those 2 clowns have destroyed the NHL and as long as they have any influence there wont be any reason to think there ever will be an NHL again, unless they bring in replacement players and screw them over with a s***ty labor deal.

FWIW, lots of rumors swirling around in Canada that both sides (not the moron Goodenow) are starting to come to their senses about what cancelling the WHOLE NHL season would do to their sport. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but lot's of people feel this deal can still get done.

Here's the TSN article...

Now would be a great time to strike a deal, this weekend. Just about the time when Ruutu is scheduled to return, too -- so if something did go down, Ruutu would be right back in action. :)

Well, folks, I just got off the phone with an NHLPA agent.

50% chance of a season THIS - yes, THIS!!! year based on the information that is being provided through the back channels to the NHLPA.

There's a lot behind the scenes, and I'll be honest, I'm SHOCKED at what's going on. That's all I can say without going into too much detail.

But damn it's good news for those who want hockey.

I know a lot of people will say that they'll want to get back at the NHL by not going to games and stuff like that, but I, for one, will be the first one back at the UC ready to watch the Hawks. I know I'm being fickle, but so what -- I want to see some real hockey. The Wolves have done nothing for me to get my hockey 'fix', and man -- I'm getting real excited.

If they get a deal done tomorrow, that's awesome. Great to see guys like Lemieux and Gretzky not let this great game go down the s***ter...

FWIW, over at Blackhawkzone.com, they've posted the new rules that will be implemented if and when the new NHL season starts, be it in March or October (hopefully no later)...

Using penalty shots to break ties.

Alleviating traffic in the neutral zone by using wider blue lines that extend the length of the zone without changing the structure of the rink.

Prohibiting goaltenders from handling pucks behind the net

Keeping play moving by allowing attacking players who were offside to resume forechecking once they regrouped in the neutral zone.

What do you guys think about the penalty shots? They'll still have the great OT's for the playoffs, but even for the regular season -- I really don't think a game should ever be decided by a player-vs.-player type of play. Hockey is such a team game -- even if shootouts are a lot of fun, I really don't think they belong at the highest level of pro-hockey...

My Hockey loving friends would bash me when I brought up the idea of penalty shots to break ties.

That goalie rule sounds cool too.

While i'm not a fan of shootouts, i agree 100% to use them. We need to draw more "non-hockey" fans, and shootouts in the regular season would do it very well. As long as they don't f*** with the playoffs i'm fine with it.

Also, FINALLY they went back to tag up offsides.

Not positive on that, but that seems about right. It'd be wicked gay if it was 2 pts for a shootout win and 0 for a shootout loss.

NHL needs more fans, period. I've always been against shootouts. Call me a hockey purist; whatever. I probly feel that way because i've played the game since i've been 5. Bottom line, shootouts will get more fans watching. There's something you can build upon once you have more viewers.

I hate the idea of a shootout, but love the idea of hockey being back. The main thing they need to do is to CALL THE RULES in the books now. Don't let them get away with all the hooking and grabbing. Call it and keep calling it. If a stick gets up around the waist...Penalty. If a hand grabs a jersey...Penalty. No matter how much or how little.

To increase scoring, they could also shrink the size of the goalies pads. Bigger curves on the sticks.

Ray Ferraro said it today. Increase scoring.

And I will be there with CWSguy...cheering on the Hawks.

Cut down on the stick work, call the clutching and grabbing, reduce the size of the futon-goalies. That's all you have to do.

f*** america for not seeing what a beautiful game this is, and can be. If I hear one more [hockey exists?] joke, I'm gonna slug the person.

Hockey's the greatest sport ever invented, and if it were to ever die forever, I don't know what I'd do...

As for the penalty shot deal, it could work for regular season games. By keeping the regulation ties, it would not bear too much significance...anything to get more fans.

I'd also say that the obstruction penalties must go, since they do nothing but slow down the game, disallowing a nice flow. These Obstruction hooking and Obstruction holding penalties are out of hand.

These latest breaking tidbits are things that excite me. If I can go to a Hawks game within the next few weeks, I will be overzealous!

Go Hawks!

Right now this just reminds me of Quest for the Holy Grail

"bring out your dead!"

"I'm not really dead!"

I am just waiting for someone to hit this over the head and finish it off.  The league is done for this year.  I hope I am wrong, but these greedy bastards are too far gone from reality.

"I'm not quite dead" "Oh shut up, you'll be stone dead in a moment". Thats one of the best comedies ever made!!!

I didn't see this posted in here...

Report: Agreement In Principle

NHLReality of life without hockey may save the 2004-05 NHL season. The Hockey News is reporting the league and players have agreed in principle to a deal that includes a $45M salary cap. The sides will meet Saturday in NYC.

As far as the new rules...

Meh, I'm no fan of the shootout, but whatever. I guess if it can't be decided after 65 minutes of a regular season game, then the shootout should do it. I just fear a shootout deciding a game in late March that decides who goes into the playoffs, and who doesn't get in. I'm really against an individual vs. individual situation deciding who wins the game. During the bulk of the season, whatever -- fine, more fans, that's good. But, I hope that the Hawks don't get into many of 'em in the next couple years. We may have a good blueline coming up in the minors, but we're few and far between as far as those gamebreaking snipers...

I like touch-up offsides. Should have been used all along.

Widening the bluelines, fine. No problems there, not a fan of it, but not against it.

Goalies can't touch the puck -- ehh, I don't like that one. If you want to discourage goalies from touching the puck behind the net, allow them to be hit if they're out of the goalie box. But not allowing them to touch it at all behind the net is kind of dumb, IMHO...
