santo=dorf
It's the minor characters they are having problems with. They had to replace all of Phil Hartman's characters with somebody else, and now Gill is the stupid lawyer that the Simpsons always hire. There's that waiter who sounds like Homer due to a stroke. Barney isn't an alcoholic. The Lenny+Carl relationship is stupid. The whole Nelson looking for his father story is stupid. Apu getting married and having 8 kids. CrimsonWeltall
If you ask me, the success of the show has a great deal to do with character development. If you look at TV trends, I don't know if they are cartoons, sitcoms, whatever, the introduction of new character often brings about the demise of the show. The Simpsons have not introduced any new characters within the last 8-10 years. You're not the world's longest running cartoon, or TV show or whatever they won, for no reason. They don't need to introduce new characters because they started with like a hundred. There's no development because the characters are basically the same as they were at the beginning. You could watch the episodes in almost any order without many problems.
SuperSteve
QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 11:46 AM) I am one of those freaks that still thinks the Simpsons is hysterical. My wife and I laugh and laugh at every new episode and reruns. I think it has effected my son, too. He hit his head playing this weekend and said "D'OH!" true. I laugh at them too. They're funny. Kalapse
Just look at South Park. They started out with way less characters than the Simpsons so over the years they have had to add new characters in order to go along with new story lines. GoodAsGould
i think it might help some if Bart and Lisa actually aged a bit and moved up a year in school so Bart got someone new and Lisa got Mrs. Kabable or whatevr. Lisa would have to skip a grade and ive know they tried that b4 but you cant get rid of Mrs. Kabable.

Yoda
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 12:50 PM) Let's brainstorm; name some shows that bottomed out with the introduction of new characters. No, no, no. They don’t need new characters. What they need is to get off the air. Seasons 94-97 are pure gold; the rest is pure garbage. Flash Tizzle
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 01:48 PM) Just look at South Park. They started out with way less characters than the Simpsons so over the years they have had to add new characters in order to go along with new story lines. Parker/Stone realized their path was mirroing the Simpsons slap stick, formulaic routine. New characters were created naturally through the characters moving onto the next grade, which honestly broughta fresh appeal to the show. In addition to new characters, South Park's transition from episodes involving character development to current events was smooth. If you notice the first several seasons, many (if not all) episodes involved problems relating to Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny. Newer episodes obviously follow this trend, but usually there's some sort of reference to an issue in the news. Not only is the news item discussed, but usually its presented in a fashion which pushes the limits. Network TV's version of pushing the envelope is legalizing gay marriage. OMFG! Not only is the news item discussed, but usually its presented in a fashion which pushes the limits. Network TV's version of pushing the envelope is legalizing gay marriage. OMFG! Perfectly worded. The first 3 1/2 seasons were only about situations that trey and matt came up with that the kids were involved in. However when you get to the middle of the 4th season you start getting plots like "Chef Goes Nanners" where Chef complains about the South Park flag being racist but the towns people say it is a part of history. This plot is obviously a take off of the contreversy at the time involving use of the Confederate flag in southern states. Some claimed the Confederate flag was racist because it depicted a time in history where people in the south had slaves and some claimed that the confederate flag was a part of Southern history that they used tht flag for a long time and it was somewhat representative of the south in general. South Parks ability to fuse this nationally publicised story into their small town is something that the Simpsons failed to do. It shows that Trey and Matt are great but Groening and his crew have a trouble changing with the times.

DBAHO
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 05:46 AM) The Leprechaun Jockeys was a really, really bad episode. They need to do another baseball themed episode. I loved the music when the horse kept winning all of those races though, and Homer's quote; "Man I got more trophies than Wayne Gretsky and the Pope combined"

MurcieOne
I wasnt going to even post today... at school... then gonna see Dane Cook tonight at 7... but this topic is important.... The Simpsons suck.... they have for a long...long time. If you want good cartoon satire... watch South Park.... thats the best cartoon ever and Matt Stone and Trey Parker are both very intellegent and actually have their heads on straight when it comes to issues today. If they started a war tomorrow.... i'd be in boot camp at 0600. MurcieOut.

No the last five years have tainted my view of the Simpsons. I try to watch the old episodes but I just can't get the picture of Homer getting raped by a panda or skateboarding against Tony Hawk. It's ruined the classics for me.
