He's right, but he's just as boring.

Haha, yeah. He was a terrific writer, and I absolutely love some of his tracks (especially "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and "Like A Rolling Stone"), but a good chunk of his material will bore you to death, and in a lot of cases, it just doesn't sound right musically.

But yeah, he's right on the money in saying that my generation is made up of completely useless, worthless musicians.

I don't agree with him straight down the line, but I'd agree Dylan has earned the right to say what he wants to say.

And after the tragic death of John Lennon and Kurt Kobain, I don't know that there is a lyricisit alive who owns the right to say that like Dylan.

And I will say it is interesting to see who replied to this before most.

It is also easier to write "meaningful" important songs when a huge shift in society is happening all around you. Woodstock? Haight & Ashbury? Sgt Peppers? The Pill? Acid?

What will generate better music?

Free sex, a war against pseudo USSR communism in far away southeast Asia, new psychedelic drugs that expand the mind and are safe

or

STD, Aids, 9/11, Crystal Meth, Crack, and expanding democracy?

Bob Dylan is a prophet; it's apparent you haven't explored much of his music if you think Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Like A Rolling Stone are two of his few musically correct songs. He has 43 albums for f*** sakes, the two songs you named are hardly his best.

Knock knock knockin' own Heaven's door? That is a beautiful track.

Most of the material on his Greatest Hits album is amazing. "Tambourine Man", "Positively 4th Street", "Like A Rolling Stone", etc.

I have found that people who really dislike Dylan can't stand his voice.

Dude, you named yourself after him and everything (props), but I have close to 100 of his bootlegs.

I've heard plenty.

Kurt Cobain is hardly a good writer. He admitted himself that most of his lyrics didn't make sense.

I came off as a bastard, I didn't mean to. I idolize the man and he's been the inspration to my career. When people insult him, his writing and his music with having no knowledge of him, I get extremely pissed off.

OK, let's have y'alls favorite Dylan lyric:

For sure, my #1 is from Tangled Up in Blue:

She was married when we first met, soon to be divorced.

Helped her out of a jam I guess, but I used a little too much force

And a close second, from You'll Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine:

You say you love me

And you're thinkin' of me,

But you know you could be wrong.

You say you told me

That you wanna hold me,

But you know you're not that strong.

This has to be my favorite, lyrically speaking.

You got a lotta nerve

To say you are my friend

When I was down

You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve

To say you got a helping hand to lend

You just want to be on

The side that's winning

You say I let you down

You know it's not like that

If you're so hurt

Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith

But that's not where it's at

You had no faith to lose

And you know it

I know the reason

That you talk behind my back

I used to be among the crowd

You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool

To think I'd make contact

With the one who tries to hide

What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street

You always act surprised

You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"

But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me

You'd rather see me paralyzed

Why don't you just come out once

And scream it

No, I do not feel that good

When I see the heartbreaks you embrace

If I was a master thief

Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied

With your position and your place

Don't you understand

It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time

You could stand inside my shoes

And just for that one moment

I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time

You could stand inside my shoes

You'd know what a drag it is

To see you

Kurt Kobain had lots of issues with himself (duh) and I don't care what he said about his lyrics, the man spoke for a generation. Even today his lyrics loom loudly.

There are a group of decent musicians still around.  Just that many of them aren't mainstream or "Chart Toppers".  You actually have to look around and find them for yourself.

You're exactly right. I hate when people are so willing to generalize all music of our era because they're too lazy to find something new. You have to look beyond MTV, radio, and the Billboard awards. To say all of today's music is terrible is just ignorant and insulting.

From Tangled Up In Blue

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe

"I thought you'd never say hello," she said

"You look like the silent type."

Then she opened up a book of poems

And handed it to me

Written by an Italian poet

From the thirteenth century.

And every one of them words rang true

And glowed like burnin' coal

Pourin' off of every page

Like it was written in my soul from me to you,

Tangled up in blue.

And It Ain't Me Babe (my other Bob song du jour)

Go 'way from my window,

Leave at your own chosen speed.

I'm not the one you want, babe,

I'm not the one you need.

You say you're lookin' for someone

Never weak but always strong,

To protect you an' defend you

Whether you are right or wrong,

Someone to open each and every door,

But it ain't me, babe,

No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,

It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go lightly from the ledge, babe,

Go lightly on the ground.

I'm not the one you want, babe,

I will only let you down.

You say you're lookin' for someone

Who will promise never to part,

Someone to close his eyes for you,

Someone to close his heart,

Someone who will die for you an' more,

But it ain't me, babe,

No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,

It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go melt back into the night, babe,

Everything inside is made of stone.

There's nothing in here moving

An' anyway I'm not alone.

You say you're looking for someone

Who'll pick you up each time you fall,

To gather flowers constantly

An' to come each time you call,

A lover for your life an' nothing more,

But it ain't me, babe,

No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,

It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

I almost forgot this gem of a Bob Dylan story:

I took a class on existentialism in College. And we read all the big names: Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Camus, Sartre and Dylan. Our professor claimed the Bob Dylan was the last of the great existential philosophers. And I guess he was right.

He was a clean-cut kid

And they made a killer out of him

That's what they did.

They said, "Listen boy, you're just a pup"

They sent him to a napalm health spa to shape up.

They gave him dope to smoke, drinks and pills

A jeep to drive, blood to spill.

They said "Congratulation, you got what it takes"

They sent him back into the race without any brakes.

How many roads must a man walk down

Before you call him a man?

Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail

Before she sleeps in the sand?

Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly

Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,

The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up

Before he can see the sky?

Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have

Before he can hear people cry?

Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows

That too many people have died?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,

The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist

Before it's washed to the sea?

Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist

Before they're allowed to be free?

Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,

Pretending he just doesn't see?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,

The answer is blowin' in the wind.
