Goldmember
Applegate's Bad Break Mon Mar 14, 1:50 PM ET Entertainment - E! Online Gossip/Celeb By Sarah Hall Perhaps Christina Applegate (news) took the traditional theater good-luck mantra of "break a leg" a little too far. The former Married...with Children star, who's currently starring in Broadway-bound musical Sweet Charity, broke her foot during the opening moments of a Friday performance at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. Despite the break, Applegate soldiered on for 20 minutes before the production was halted and she was replaced by understudy Dylis Croman, who also played in the final three Chicago shows over the weekend. Standby Charlotte d'Amboise will step into Applegate's role for the Boston engagement of Sweet Charity, which begins Friday. D'Amboise is currently starring as Roxie Hart in the Broadway company of Chicago. Applegate is expected to recover by the time the show starts preview performances in New York on Apr. 4. The musical is scheduled to formally open Apr. 21 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. "The entire Charity family wishes Christina a speedy recovery and looks forward to welcoming her back to the company when the show begins performances on Broadway," producer Barry Weissman said in a statement. Sweet Charity tells the story of Charity Hope Valentine, a dancer who always falls for the wrong man. Neil Simon penned the script and Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields wrote the score for the original Broadway production which opened in 1966 with Gwen Verdon in the title role. In 1969, Shirley MacLaine took the title role to the big screen in the film adaptation of Sweet Charity. In 1986, both Debbie Allen and Ann Reinking starred in the 20th anniversary Broadway revival of the play. Before returning to the stage next month, Applegate will appear opposite her husband, Johnathon Schaech, in telepic Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, scheduled to air Mar. 27 on CBS.
