Robbie Alomar retires.

How the hell does Danny Bautista not get a job.  He had a solid year this past season.

He did with the devils rays.

Devil Rays announced the retirement of outfielder Danny Bautista.

Robby Alomar's retirement is surprising, but this is just baffling. Bautista is only 32 and the Rays were set to pay him $1.9 million to play regularly this year. We would have assumed retirement was the furthest thing from his mind. Obviously, something isn't completely right here. Maybe there's a health problem that he doesn't want revealed or perhaps this is even steroid related. The Rays may now give second looks to Joey Gathright and Jonny Gomes, both of whom were already sent to minor league camp.

Steroids would make sense.

The guy is a 5th OFer for quite a few years of his career, and he becomes a very solid player just like that at around the age of 30? Got injured in 2002 early in the year, as a starter for Arizona...though I can't remember exactly what his injury was...and he is now guaranteed $1.9 mill by the DRays, yet retires?

Put 2 and 2 together.

or it could be health issues or family issues... there are a thousand reasons to retire not involving steroids.... so its kind of hard to "put 2 to 2 together"  :headshake

Just seems kind of odd that he would suddenly retire when he is guaranteed $1.9 mill. It also seems kind of odd that he was never much of a hitter(as in the highest he'd ever hit at any point in his career prior to 1999 was perhaps the .282/.358/.412 in 170 ABs in for AAA Richmond in 97, or the .285/.340/.382 in 117 games, 424 AB's in 1993 with Detroit's AA team.

And now, as a soon to be 32 year old, guaranteed $1.9 mill, coming off a good year, he just retires?

If it's not for steroids, I'm sorry for this...but this screams steroids to me.

This is going to be an unpleasant after-effect of the whole steroid thing.

Anyone who retires "suspiciously" or gets injured "suspiciously" or whose play improves or declines "suspiciously" is going to be assumed guilty of roids until proven innocent.

It's too bad, but it's also understandable.

Even if he was on steroids why would he retire? Its not like he had hall of fame potential and he didnt wanna ruin his chances.. so I dont think it would have been that big of a deal to get suspended even if he failed a test

I just dont see why he would retire because of steroids, all he would be risking was suspension and a fine.. I dont think steroids would make his turn down near 2 million dollars

Ricky Williams wasn't a potential hall of famer, and marijuana would not ruin his chances of making the hall of fame even if he were, yet he retired too.

And I would guess it is much more of a hit to a person's ego and reputation to be convicted of using steroids then marijuana.

Personal pride comes into play a lot, I would venture to guess.

But Bautista had long been talked about when he was with both Florida and Arizona. It always seemed to be health that got in his way because both teams were high on him at different points of his tenure.

I don't even remember which expansion team drafted him in the expansion draft, but it was one of them and I know he's been on both teams.
