Y2HH
I'll pass on Cotts until he develops more reliable pitches than a short-armed fastball. Cotts is not the answer, it takes hitters less than one at bat to figure out he will throw that fastball in a pinch, and they will knock it over the centerfield concourse when it happens. This lands on Bmac, and if not Bmac, Hermanson. -y2 QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 10:44 AM) Another route is stretching Cotts out. We still have a couple starters that have shown AAA flash in the system.

Y2HH
Cotts has had quite a few years to be developing more reliable pitches, and all I see is that fastball still. LosMediasBlancas
For B Mac, is the old 'they've never seen him pitch before" any real advantage? Especially when you consider, it would only be for a few starts. No one would see him twice.
AddisonStSox
I know, I know, it happens. It's just that, Buehrle is our horse. It's going to take awhile to get over this one. I'm crestfallen.

JUGGERNAUT
2004 HR tally/month: APR 28, 25, 45, 29, 53, 41 - HR's given up The Sox didn't play their first Cell game until Apr 13. Opening at home is certainly going to help this year. Mark B says he's feeling good today so they are going to do a 2nd MRI.
Guest JimH
Latest ESPN 1000 update says it's the bone on the 5th (little) toe in his left foot, and that Buehrle is feeling great today and will have another bone scan and MRI this afternoon. mreye
Sigh... I'm still optimistic about the season. No doomsayer here!
EvilJester99
So if it is just his toe, I wonder if Buehrle will try and play through it or if they will make him sit down and rest it.

rangercal
off espns wire CHICAGO - Lefthander Mark Buehrle apparently will have to wait an extra month before making his 2005 season debut. According to a report from ESPN 1000 in Chicago, Buehrle will miss up to six weeks after a bone scan revealed a broken bone in his left foot. "It's a tough blow for both Mark and us," White Sox general manger Kenny Williams told the station. "The only good news is that of the six weeks he will miss, two will be in spring training, so we only might miss him for a month." Buehrle, who had been tabbed as the White Sox's Opening Day starter, suffered the injury while shagging fly balls before Chicago's Cactus League game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday. Williams indicated that Freddy Garcia will start on Opening Day against the Cleveland Indians on April 4 in Buehrle's absence and rookie Brandon McCarthy will join the rotation as the fifth starter. Buehrle, who turns 26 on Wednesday, went 16-10 with a 3.89 ERA and a career-high 165 strikeouts in 35 starts last year. He has gone 69-45 with a 3.76 ERA in five seasons with the White Sox. In his most recent spring training start, Buehrle worked six hitless innings, striking out seven. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=2018303 Edited March 21, 2005 by rangercal
JUGGERNAUT
How do we go from a broken foot to a fractured toe? Who made the initial diagnosis? If it's just the toe, it's possible he'll just miss the rest of ST.

I'm crestfallen. yeah man, this definately blows. at least if tehre is a posistive, its that hes not experiencing arm problems like teh cubs pitchers. this shouldnt be a recurring problem. Anyone know if its his left foor or right? hopefully its not his left drive foot.
EvilJester99
Maybe they have the Cubs doctor checking him out...

EvilJester99
Since there is so much stuff out there, I guess you expect the worst and hope for the best on this one...
AnthraxFan93
Now we have problems.. But the kind we want.. What if BMac.. shines while Marky out, as does the other pitchers.. I think Garland is the odd man out then, but we will see For once I live having these problems..better than than last year pitching staff. Hope, B_mac does shine, Marky takes his time to come back and poof.. we have 6 legit starters
T R U
I think it wouldnt be bad to have BMac in our rotation.. he would get to pitch with the big club for like a month and then if he is struggling he can be sent to AAA and he would have had a taste of the majors.. OR he will be real solid and we keep him up and trade away Contreras.. I dont really see calling BMac up being a bad thing, at least I am hoping
southsider2k5
QUOTE(El Piervizdyeguchansodnik @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) We should bring Kevin Walker up and put Cotts in AAA to stretch out his arm for starting. Agree with you totally. I wanted Neal in the pen over Walker before, but right now we need back up options for starters just in case something happens to Contreras or Hernandez, or if BMac gets killed at the major league level. Yossarian
I don't count Contreras as a legitimate starter, although he is welcome to change my mind.
Texsox
When Mark comes back, it will be interesting is KW keeps singing "don't worry about salary, play the best guy" song he told Ozzie will Harris. It probably isn't worth speculating now, wait until Mark is ready and see who is shining and who is struggling, then let the debate begin. beck72
Here's my "glass is half full" look at the injury. *It was Mark's foot, not his arm or elbow which could affect his entire year or career. Mark should be back when the bone is healed w/ few limitations. *B-Mac gets a shot to prove himself after a spring in which he has been the best SP in camp *The Sox will know which among Garland, El Duque, Freddy and Contreras can step it up when the sox need them too. Better to have some pressure on them in April than expecting them to perform in October and they flop. *The team has to rally together to start the year to overcome the loss of their best pitcher
