This would be the ideal situation.  Alvarez is a lot closer than Sanchez, but I'd welcome either.

My bad. There could be a number of other teams in the "win now" mode who could part with a AA or AAA pitching prospect in order to get a proven SP like Contreras [sF, the Cubs]

Garland has a couple of things working for him.  #1 he makes half of what Contreras does and #2 he is at least consistant, especially when you compare him to what Jose does.

Agreed on both counts. Jon has shown he can still go 6, 7 innings when he doesn't have his good stuff. The sox would still have to part with some salary no doubt this year and leave the team trading for him to pick up next yr's cash

To those that feel bringing the hottest pitcher the Sox have this ST up to start as a number 5 until MB's healed as an idea that's completely ludicrous, who else would you rather have in his spot if NOT McCarthy?

Cotts? Adkins?

Barring a trade (which won't happen), McCarthy is the way to go at this point.

i just got an email from Jerry Crasnick of espn...heres what i aksed and his response

Jerry, I emailed you about Brandon McCarthy last year, and you said he

> was legit. He has been tearing up spring training, and with Mark Buerhle

> breaking his foot and out a month, McCarthy looks like he will get his shot.

> What can us White Sox fans hope for?

Dan,

I was out there for his first spring training start a couple of weeks ago, and everybody was raving about him then. Still, he's just a kid, and it's a lot to ask for him to replace Buerhle and light it up right away. I'm sure they'll try to take the pressure off him as much as they can.

Thanks for the note,

Jerry

It's about damn time the Sox can pull a Prior or a Pujols.

Having a really young guy in the big leagues and step up and dominate at their position.

I don't even really need him to dominate just not suck total ass like every other pitching prospect brought up since Buehrle.

BMac is being asked to be the #5 SP, not the #1

Is he? Or does it depend on what he thinks he's has to replace?

In the meantime, Friday should be a big start for him since until now he's been able to pitch worry free all spring.

Let's think about this. They go out & trade for Garcia, Contreras, & sign Hernandez to insure that Garland is the 5th. Contreras looks awful right now. I do not see Ozzie moving the starter who's having the worst spring to the 3rd spot. He's more likely to move BMac there.

Thinking about this. I think the rotation to start the season will be Garcia, Contreras, McCarthy, Hernandez, Garland. My reasoning is as follows. Ozzie has already stated his preference for having El Duque make the first road start, since he's more of a road warrior than Contreras. Having BMac start the 3rd game at home will allow him to pitch without all the pomp and circumstance of someone's opening day and he'll have a friendly crowd cheering him on.

Every manager in the league would put the 21 yr old rookie in the 5th spot, and move up the rest of the rotation

Call me crazy. B-Mac holds his own, KW tries to sell Milwaulkee on the idea of trading Jose Contreras plus half of his remaining salary plus Brian Anderson and another prospect for Ben Sheets. And no I don't think Jose could handle being a closer. We all know what he's like with runners on base. Not a good situation for a closer or a reliever in general.

Your crazy! :chair

Well obviously buehrle being out really, really sucks. Brandon will get his shot no, no doubt and if he continues to impress and does what we all think he can do, I don't think you can send him back down to the minors. Like I said before if Brandon does pitch well in the majors, that's a great problem to have and something is going to have to be worked out to keep brandon on the major league roster.

Nothing scares me more than foolishly rushing a prospect through the system.  History shows that is NOT the way to go.  Sure, there are exceptions, there always are.  But, when you are sitting on a prospect with as much talent as McCarthy, it scares the hell out of me to rush him to the show.

Make no mistake about it, McCarthy is the best option.  However, that doesn't mean it shouldn't scare the hell out of me.

For once, I'd love to see a Sox minor league pitcher pan-out.  Who was the last one, Buehrle?  We've had some rotten luck.  I'd hate to F this up.

EDIT: Truth is, we have a lot of people looking at this situtation through McCarthy colored glasses.  In reality, we have our best pitching prospect at 20 years of age being rushed.  That is never a good thing, no matter how prosiming he looks.

Normally I would agree 100% but BMAC has a very good head on his shoulders and will take getting sent back to the queen city very well. I was worried when Dan Wright said he was prepared and ready for the Bigs But Bmac doens't strike me as a Danny Wright.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but a guy over at WSI (who lives in Texas) said that the Rangers are a team that is interested in Contreras (per their FSN in Texas).

A trade to Texas could make sense. They seem to be like a possible candidate, if McCarthy proves capable of handling the majors.

And I agree with Jim. You can't really put age as a factor against McCarthy. If he's ready, he's ready, and we'll all know whether or not he can handle it -- age aside. If he's better than someone in our rotation, you gotta do what's best for the team, and keep him up. This is all, if he proves capable.

But then everyone else is in a role they're not used to.

Garcia isn't a #1 and Contreras isn't a #3 (yet -- hopefully this year he improves).

But then again, I consider that all moot -- I really don't like putting a number on a pitcher.

It'll certainly be a nice problem to have, having capable men battling for five spots. I guess it can only mean good things, right?

You're right that numbers don't matter when it comes to the season. The only time they ever really matter is the postseason.

If you have 5 decent starters, you could have your ace start the 3rd game of the year, and he'd probably end up with about the same amount of starts as the guy who started opening day.

Also...you know that KW is already on the phones about a potential deal in the future...whether or not you like the thought of BMac being rushed. If he can come in and put up Greinke-esque numbers(not even that good), I can almost already see Contreras being shipped out. If BMac can put up Greinke/Buehrle numbers in his first year, Contreras will be out of here about as fast as Royce Clayton was when JM found him in tennis shoes on the bench(except it will be a trade and not a flat out release)
