Anyone ever stay at the Rio

I have to plan a bachelor party trip to Vegas for next spring and I was thinking about the Rio. It seems to be the best deal for what you get - a couch and fridge in every room, 5 pools, spas, etc. Sure, there are cheaper rooms on the strip, but they don't seem to have the amenities that the Rio does.

I've stayed at Bally's and a few other places on the strip, but their prices have really skyrocketed in recent years.

Any thoughts?

The first time I went to Vegas, I stayed at the Rio. It was absolutely fantastic. As you said, the only drawback is the distance from the strip. But if you're willing to get over that, the Rio is a great choice. Terrific rooms, great food, nice atmosphere. The pool area is impressive as well.

Pffttt. cheapo... go for the Bellagio or the Venetian...

Seriously, I stayed at the Rio when it first opened. Never for a bachelor party though.

No frickin' way! I wouldn't spend that kind of money on this group of guys! I'm the best man and not very close to the rest of the groomsmen and the groom's friends. While I'll get most of the money back, I don't trust them too much.

Personally, I don't care where we stay. I just want to gamble. These guys, on the other hand, aren't big gamblers and will be there more for the "atmosphere."

Yeah, it's a mile from the strip, but I guess they have a free shuttle to the strip every 15 minutes, which is cool.

I think I may go this way, but I still have close to a year to decide.

Boy you had better get on that quick, youre running out of time...

I think the Rio is a fine place for a bachelor party...It has a bit more of a "grown up" atmosphere.

Plus the advantage of it being off the strip kinda keeps the tourists away...I.E. snapping 5000 pictures, :crying kids and senior citizen tourbuses stopping on the way to the Grand Canyon.

The pool setup is nice and it has almost everything you need as a gambler including a poker room. The Rio is IMO the Palms b4 the Palms...its a nice place, nothing extravagent but will fit what your lookin for!!

Well, I'd like to get the final numbers ASAP for all the cheap bastards that are going so I can get my money before we go.

The Rio is cool and check out the club at the top of the hotel (can't remember the name off the top of my head), but they have an outdoor/rooftop bar that has a great view of Vegas esp. at night. The other place you might want to check out is Mandalay Bay, they have the best pool in Vegas that includes a clothing optional section. Have fun!

I actually like staying off the strip. I charted my wins/loses for a couple trips and noticed my dramatic loses were always at the end of a session. The breaking point seemed to be 4 hours, regardless of game (craps, bj). Even switching games, tables, casinos, didn't help as much as a longish break. So now I stay off the strip, but travel over there for betting, never, ever, playing at the hotel I'm staying. Which means, yes, paying for rooms and meals instead of being comped.

However, if I was planning a trip with some first timers, I'd plant their butts on the strip.

I go to Vegas 3-4 times a year (I live in LA) and I usually stay at either Mandalay or The Flamingo (I like the Bugsy old time gangster feel). I think Texsox is right about setting limits, often though this is related to the amount of booze you are pounding @ the table as well. I set a 4 hour limit and a loss and win limit. I always figure out how much money I have to gamble with and divide it by the number of days I'm going to be there and divide that by two for two sessions a day. I then have my daily amount I can lose. If I go up the amount of my total for the whole trip, I'll walk away from that session, unless I'm playing craps (I'll wait for the shooter to crap out).

One thing I discovered the first time I did this was they have shows in Vegas! Who would have thought

Booze and gambling is an obvious concern. Why do you think the drinks are so quick to arrive?

I like your idea of two sessions per day. That makes a lot of sense. I'm thinking of a serious morning/mid day session, then an evening session at much lower stakes and drinking. As much as I love the 24/7 atmosphere, I just never feel good about gin and tonics at 10:00 am.

The real questions is: Do they have a shuttle to Celine Dion's show as well?

:puke

Shouldn't that be in green?

In all seriousness, thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not worried about losing. I always win. I have a system. But, really, I'm pretty responsible when it comes to that. So, in that case, I don't like your idea of not playing where you stay, Tex. Might as well get the comps, I say.

These aren't first timers, so I'm not sure if they'll care about staying off the strip. That's the biggest hangup for me. I've always stayed on the strip and really enjoy all the people and sights. I only get to go about once every 2 years and I would hate to have a miserable time by missing out on all that. I guess I'll just run it by the group.

I like the sound of a drunken bachelor party visiting the lovely Mrs. Dion's show. Should spice it right up.

I am certain they wouldn't be looking for topless places

the rio is also pretty close to the Palms. IMO, the Palms is a better casino to play at. Cheaper tables and the atmosphere favors younger people.

I forgot about the Palms. One other thing about Rio is they're owned by harrah's and there's a Harrah's boat near me where I can rack up some reward points.

Hey Eye another cool little trick for Vegas is that you can check into most of the major hotels at the airport. Saves you a bunch of time as you can check in before your luggage makes it down to baggage claim. Check w/the Rio to make sure they have one of these checkin places, I'm pretty sure they do. Most of them are surrounding the baggage claim area and easy to see. Just head there straight from the plane.
