UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations should have let the Iraqi people suffer under international sanctions rather than allow Saddam Hussein to skim billions off the Oil for Food Program, Iraq's ambassador to the UN has told the makers of a documentary airing on CBC.

 

"Had we had no program at all, I submit that we might have gotten to the point of removing Saddam earlier, or creating conditions inside Iraq for him to be toppled," Samir Sumaidaie told journalist Terence McKenna for a documentary that aired Monday night on CBC's The National.

Christopher Shays, the Republican politician who is leading an American Congressional probe of the Oil for Food scandal, acknowledges in the documentary that the U.S. was more concerned about making sure Saddam could not build weapons of mass destruction than policing where money from the program was actually going.

 

That was a mistake, he told McKenna.

 

"Saddam was able to accumulate clearly at least $10 billion and probably a significant amount more," he said. "I'm not saying $10 million, I'm saying $10 billion. With $10 billion, he can do a lot of mischief."

This is a very interesting situation that I have not looked into much until today.

 

Along those same lines the latest Voelker report is due out soon and is widely expected to criticize Kofi Annan for being negligent and slam his son for being complicit.
