Rex Hudler
QUOTE(Spiff @ Mar 31, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) But Richt has put him in on every third series or so for the last two or three years and he's always made the offense stall. He's not very good at all. I don't think the amount of time he has gotten is fair to evaluate his abilities overall. There is something to be said for being the #1 QB, for getting all the reps in practice with the first team, for getting consistent opportunities, rather than a series or two each game. He may not turn out to be great, but I don't think what he has done so far is a fair measuring stick.
witesoxfan
Just a FWIW type thing, Scott Wright has him going in the first round to Pittsburgh NFL Draft Countdown Mock Draft
Punch and Judy Garland
Don't be surprised if Denver jumps in on him early if they are rebuffed in attemtps to make a run at Mike Williams higher on the board
T R U
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 01:04 AM) Just a FWIW type thing, Scott Wright has him going in the first round to Pittsburgh NFL Draft Countdown Mock Draft wow, theres no way Jones goes in round 1 He is too much of a project for that.. he really doesnt have a solid posistion right now, it would be too risky to use a 1st rounder on him.. knightni
Not to get too far off subject, but this seems to be the first draft in awhile where no one really knows what's going to happen in the selection process.
Punch and Judy Garland
I disagree TRU, nobody has the buzz he has right now. Somebody MAY blink and take him at the end of round one. One odd thing is that only good teams have talked about taking him. That's kind of strange

SoxFan562004
Isn't he supposed to be, um, a how do I put this in a nice way... a bit flighty? I remembered watching the Combine coverage and the announcers saying he was "laid back" which is always interesting

You dont take that kind of risk picks in round one.. I would figure that one of the reasons behind Pittsburgh taking him there is their success turning college QBs into good pro WR's. While taking Jones there is a risk, I do think it is a risk worth taking for Pittsburgh, due to his ceiling and them not having a ton of needs. The fact does remain that he has top 10 talent, and seeing him go there actually doesn't surprise me a lot.
Palehosefan
I'm expecting the Steelers to draft a CB in the first round. Then trade up their 2nd round pick and some other picks to get to the middle/front of the 2nd round and take Matt, like they did a few years ago trading up for Bell before others could snatch him up. Punch and Judy Garland
In general, when so many teams re in on a guy (Rams-Denver-Pitt) then someone will overreach for him. He may not go inthe first round TRU, you definitely could be right. BUT, I anticipate a team with a low two moving up into the high two's in the event that they wait past the first round. Bottom line, he will be picked in the top 50 for sure.
southsideirish
QUOTE(Fotop @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) Anyone read up on this guy at all or have seen him play? Chris Mortenson on ESPN wrote a rather long article about this guy, and it was damn impressive. The kid is 6'6" and ran a 4.37 (hand-timed)/4.40 (electronically-timed), as well as having a 39.5 in vertical jump. He played QB for Arkansas, but doesn't project as one because of his unorthodox style and an old shoulder injury. But what I'm thinking is he'd be one heck of a receiver...something out of the Randel El mold. He's taller and faster than Mike Williams, granted he hasn't played nearly enough reciever as Williams has but potentially he could be a huge matchup problem. So here's what I'm thinking, with all of this talk of the Niners trading down and the chargers grabbing edwards before us...why not take the best player available at the #4 (probably a RB) and grab this Jones kid with the 2nd round pick? Maybe 2nd rd is a reach, but he's got all of the tools of the top guys. Maybe I'm jumping off a cliff for this guy, but mark him down as one of my favorites in the draft. I think taking a long look at this guy is warranted, especially if the Bears grab a third round pick in a trade. I've linked the article I read below if you're interested. Matt Jones <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I heard a while ago that most scouts and teams are looking at him as a TE, not a WR.

Punch and Judy Garland
He wont play TE, according to Mort, because he's too light right now and gaining weight would pull his speed down. Jones wants to play WR.
T R U
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 05:59 PM) He wont play TE, according to Mort, because he's too light right now and gaining weight would pull his speed down. Jones wants to play WR. If anyones gonna take a risk on him in the 1st round I could see the Patriots being that team.. I think Pittsburgh needs to take a LB, someone like Channing Crowder.. they have lost Gildon and Bell the last 2 years and Farrior is an older player I believe.. Palehosefan
Farrior turned 30 in January, so he has some gas left in his tank. Also, the Steelers usually draft a LB/undersized DE in the 4th-5th round and plug them into the lineup. Now they have Larry Foote, James Harrison, and Alonzo Jackson waiting in the wings. But I would expect them to draft a LB a little earlier this year, but I really doubt in the 1st round. Others are predicting the Steelers will grab a TE in the 1st round, but I don't see that either. TE isn't used much in the offense, outside of blocking. You can find a good blocking TE later on in the draft. I really expect the Steelers to draft a CB in the 1st round, its a position of serious need, and its stocked full of talent this year.
