Bulls center Eddy Curry remained hospitalized in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday with an irregular heartbeat that sidelined him for the team's victory over the Bobcats on Wednesday night.

 

Cardiologists at Presbyterian Hospital continued to run tests on the 6-11, 285-pound Curry to determine the severity of his condition and treat it. Curry missed the Bulls' home game Thursday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and a source said he will be out at least through this weekend and possibly seven to 10 days.

 

The Bulls, who are jockeying for the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, play four games in the next 10 days.

This sucks especially because I was looking forward to seeing him live tomorrow but let's hope he will be fine for the playoffs. Get well soon, Eddy! :wub:

The Bulls flew Eddy Curry back to Chicago on a private jet Friday afternoon, and the 6-foot-11 center continued to undergo tests to determine what caused him to experience an irregular heartbeat shortly before the Bulls played the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday.

 

Curry spent an extra day at a Charlotte hospital, where he was joined by his mother, Gayle, and his fiancée, Patrice, on Thursday.

General manager John Paxson feels there is no cause for alarm, but he said Curry will not play tonight when the Bulls host a rematch against Charlotte at the United Center.

“He’ll be in the hospital (Friday) night,” Paxson said by phone from St. Louis, where he will scout the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four.

 

“I still do not have a definitive answer on what we’re dealing with. Until we get everything back, I don’t want to give a partial answer.

 

“I think what will happen is (today) after all these tests are done and we get with the doctors, I think we’ll put out a definitive statement before the game on what it is, what the treatment is and go from there. We just want to get all the information. We’ll have it spelled out the best we can.”

 

There is no word yet on when Curry will be allowed to play again. The Bulls leave Monday for a three-game road trip to Miami, Orlando and New York.

 

“You start hearing all sorts of stories about arrhythmia,” Paxson said. “We think it’s something that’s going to be fine, going to be taken care of.”

 

The Bulls took Friday off after extending their winning streak to a season-high eight games with a 102-90 overtime victory over Cleveland on Thursday.

 

The winning has continued even with the team’s top two scorers on the shelf. Curry has missed three games during the streak with the heart problem and a hamstring strain, while Kirk Hinrich sat out five games with a hamstring injury.

 

“It’s been remarkable,” Paxson said. “That’s where (coach) Scott (Skiles) has never been afraid to play the bench guys all year long.

 

“They’re prepared to play. They have a lot of confidence in one another right now. We’re obviously happy our guys are playing hard and staying together.”

 

The Bulls have gotten double-digit scoring games from nine different players during the winning streak. That represents everyone on the active roster except Chris Duhon, Eric Piatkowski and Adrian Griffin.

 

“Scott’s done a great job coaching the team,” Paxson continued. “We’re down to 11 games left and I don’t think anybody has done a better job coaching his team than Scott.”

CHICAGO -- Bulls center Eddy Curry was ruled out of his third straight game Saturday because of an irregular heartbeat.

Coach Scott Skiles said the 22-year-old player might rejoin the team next week when the Bulls start a three-game road trip Tuesday night in Miami.

 

"They're getting to a point where they feel like they got a handle on it," Skiles said Saturday after the team's shootaround. "He should be fine."

Curry underwent extensive testing Friday at a Chicago hospital to determine the severity of the condition. Skiles couldn't say if Curry would be put on medication to control the problem that first flared up last Monday during a game against Memphis when he scored 25 points.

 

The 6-foot-11 Curry, who made the jump from high school to the NBA four years ago, is the Bulls' leading scorer. Chicago had won eight straight going into Saturday night's home game against Charlotte.

The Bulls continued to paint a positive picture about Eddy Curry on Saturday, even as they issued a news release that raised more questions than it gave answers about his irregular heartbeat.

 

Curry still is undergoing tests at Rush University Medical Center, where he spent his second night Saturday. The release stated that Curry "will most likely remain in the hospital for several more days" and that a more definitive treatment plan will be released Monday.

 

"He is comfortable and in no distress," said Kathy Weber, the team's internal medicine/sports medicine team physician. "He is with his family and [has] a positive disposition."

 

Coach Scott Skiles spoke to Curry by phone Saturday and seconded that view. Curry also received a visit from team Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

 

A team source said Curry remains in the hospital because doctors are working to perfect a medication plan to treat and potentially cure his arrhythmia.

 

In a phone interview on Thursday, Curry said medication he received in a Charlotte hospital instantly made him feel better. Attempts to reach Curry on Saturday were unsuccessful.

 

Many basketball players have played through heart conditions without complications, including current 76ers guard Aaron McKie and retired players Derrick Coleman, Hakeem Olajuwon and Bill Bradley.

 

Curry is in line to sign a lucrative contract extension this summer, so his condition must be tested thoroughly and diagnosed properly.

 

The one question nobody from the Bulls answered was why Curry remained in the hospital. Most tests for minor heart conditions, such as echocardiograms and stress tests, are done on an outpatient basis.

 

"I can't comment on that other than to say he's doing well and we look forward to getting him back," Skiles said.

 

A team spokesman said neither athletic trainer Fred Tedeschi nor general manager John Paxson would answer questions. Paxson is in St. Louis scouting the NCAA Final Four.

 

When Curry will be available to play also is unknown. The Bulls leave Monday for a three-game trip to Miami, Orlando and New York. One team official said the Knicks' game (Friday) is the best-case scenario for Curry.

 

"Even if he was totally cleared to play, there's a certain rhythm to the NBA season that guys get used to," Skiles said. "All of a sudden, Eddy has been forced to lay around for two or three or four days or however long it's going to be. We'll make sure we're smart about it. It may be that you see him back but not see him play.

 

"It hasn't only been medically what he's going through. He was in Charlotte. He stayed without the team. Patrice [Coye, his fiance] and his Mom [Gayle] went down. He had to stay there longer than he thought. Any of us who have had medical tests done on us know that that's not fun. But he seemed to be doing very well when I talked to him. Considering all that, and how young he is, he seems to be fine."

The tests performed this week on Eddy Curry's irregular heartbeat are being called inconclusive, and the fourth-year center will undergo further exams by specialists in Minnesota and Boston, according to the team's official website. "Our first priority is Eddy's health and we are going to be absolutely certain we have all the answers we need before he returns to the court," general manager John Paxson said in a statement on Thursday.
