JOHN'S, NFLD. - A U.S. missile launch, which would have showered debris over the Grand Banks off Newfoundland and forced the evacuation of offshore oil platforms, has been postponed. Defence Minister Bill Graham said the United States has agreed to an indefinite delay in a missile test that sent officials in St. John's and Ottawa into a diplomatic scramble Thursday. ... The debris from the launch – including a 10-tonne solid rocket booster – was scheduled to land in an area that includes the Hibernia platform, located about 350 kilometres east of St. John's. ... The Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board said Hibernia's operators were advised debris may fall within about 27 kilometres of the platform. Obviously playing it safe.
