aboz56
Unfortunately, I was at the game yesterday. It was a late celebration for my birthday so I decided to head up and back the same day for the game. First off, the stadium looks great. The Fundamentals deck just adds another component to the park that is unique and can't get anywhere else. Sat on the 1st base side for about the first 5 innings and froze before deciding to move to the 3rd base side into the sun for the rest of the way. Now, onto the tragedy that was the game. Perhaps, no, it was the worst bullpen management I've seen. Why Dustan Hermanson was ever taken out of the game is beyond me. Why let teams get extended looks at Shingo? Hermanson was flat out nasty yesterday, yet we have to pull him to get Shingo a save. Nothing against Shingo, but Hermanson will be closing for this team soon enough. Was very impressed with Iguchi after my first look at him. Seems to handle the bat well and likes to battle at the plate. Definitely an upgrade over Willie in my eyes. Hopefully my next trip to the Cell is better than yesterday. Now that I think about it, it couldn't get much worse.
YASNY
Sorry you picked such a stinker to go see, aboz. Have faith. Next time will be better.
Jordan4life_2007
As somebody mentioned in another thread. We seem to have one of these types of heartbreakers every year the first 2 or 3 games. A win tonight over the Twins will make me forget about yesterday.

A sweep would have been a great way to start the season.

And i'm not just saying this because of what happened yesterday.
aboz56
Hermanson will be closing by May 1st and rightfully so. Book it. Those balls were just absolutely crushed yesterday, it was unreal.
Jordan4life_2007
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 08:57 AM) Hermanson will be closing by May 1st. Book it. I hope not. Not because I don't think he can do the job, but that means Shingo would've failed miserably in the closers role.
aboz56
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2004 @ Apr 8, 2005 -> 10:58 AM) I hope not. Not because I don't think he can do the job, but that means Shingo would've failed miserably in the closers role. Don't get me wrong, I like Shingo, but unless he develops something else besides fastball/change and can use it effectively, hitters will sit on straight fastball. Eventually hitters figure out a pitcher and they need to make adjustments. I am not jumping off the bridge totally yet on Shingo, but he does need to evaluate what he is doing after getting shelled like that yesterday. It wasn't like he got burned by a few bunt singles and errors, those balls were just crushed and way gone.
WilliamTell
Shingo struggled early in the season last year too. I hope he can get it together this year. It'll be harder for him since people are getting and understanding of what to expect from him.
southsider2k5
If the umpires had anykind of a strike zone yesterday, no one would even be talking about Hermanson.

I don't like that as an argument. You can't give up 3 homers like that in one inning with a three run lead. Hell Ozzie should've pulled him after the second one. Wise Master Buehrle
Isn't Shingo like 19 of 21 in save attempts?? EVeryone has a bad game. Shingo was hanging his pitches. It happens. He'll get over it. How quickly we forget when he sat down the Indians 1-2-3 a mere 3 games ago. :headshake

Guest JimH
The biggest mistake was the 2-2 fastball, inside, to Crisp. That pitch was called for and that's where Pierzynski's glove was. I was watching going "change up away, change up away". That fastball was a total meatball, I don't know why he didn't try to get Crisp fishing on the 2-2. Crisp is noted for raking on fastballs. Of course, very easy for me to 2nd guess in front of a tv set, but I'd like to find out the reasoning for that pitch selection. He already threw one HR ball on a get-me-over fastball ... why challenge another guy with the very same pitch?
3E8
Shingo CAN survive on just a fastball and a change. He just can't leave them hanging up in the middle of the zone.

Yes, the umps dont play the game. But they handcuffed shingo and the tribe capitalized. If that zone is called on say, tribe's 789, the odds are still in the sox' favor. Btw, can we kill this now? I almost wish we were playing a day game today. Edited April 8, 2005 by ZeroHour

Rowand44
The reason that shingo got hit yesterday was because his fastball was up and over the middle of the plate, it's not because anyone is figuring shingo out. Shingo's going to be absolutely fine.

CWSGuy406
Did anyone watching on TV notice Shingo's new pitch? Maybe I wasn't watching close enough last year -- but yesterday, he was throwing a pitch that I can best describe as a two-seam fastball, Bartolo Colon like. Meaning, it was tailing in to left-handers and at the last second, cutting back to the inside part of the plate. When he threw that pitch, it had some sick movement. Problem was (IMHO), he was throwing way, way too many fastballs. I was happy that he was smart enough to not walk anyone, but he was throwing absolute "meatballs", as Boz referred to them as... I only saw one or two frisbee's, and when he threw 'em, they were off the plate. He's gotta throw that frisbee for strikes, or he's in not gonna get the job done this year. ZeroHour
THATs the pitch im talking about. Its sick, it looks like its going to end up in the LH batters box, then cuts back. He didnt get it yesterday. When he does...oof.
IndplsSoxFan
It was the 3rd game of the season and it's April. Hopefully Ozzie & Shingo learned from this. It's time for them to focus on the Twins. I'm not too worried.
