We're allowed to criticize other fans?

But yeah, soccer fans are notoriously the worst. They put running out and beating an ump to shame. Riots and such seem to be the norm in those big European rivalries, and Latin America, to a lesser extenct.

The video was nuts, the goalkeeper got smacked right in the shoulder/head with a lit flare, all in all there was like 16 flare's thrown onto the field. How the hell do they get flare's into the game is my question? I would be terrified to go to any rivalry European football game, thats insane.

Flares are very common in a lot of european stadiums. I have no idea why. :huh I've only ever seen one in England, and that was a month ago.

Interesting point about being "terrified" to go to a rivalry game. As my view from the other side of the fence, is that I'd rather go to a big soccer rivalry game than (for example) sit in the stands at an Oakland Raiders game.

I guess it's all about what we read in the papers, and see on TV. Oakland has a bad reputation over here. Is it a justified reputation? - I don't know.

I've seen a few articles on soccer, on American websites, and the majority are very, very wrong. In fact they are so far from the truth it's unreal.

Going by some of the crap that I've read, you'd think you would be lucky to go to a soccer match and get out of the stadium alive.

That couldn't be any further from the truth - I've gone to games for 20 years (a lot of them in some of the more "hostile" stadiums) and have NEVER seen any trouble at all.

I can't really speak for other countries, but the progress made on stopping hooliganism here has been so good, that one of the SAFEST places to be in Britain, is inside a soccer stadium.

Yeah, but for some reason Premier League crowds are tamer than, say Serie A. The Italians are nuts, this is the 2nd time in Italy they have had stuff thrown onto the field. Earlier in the Champions League in Rome, a fan threw a coin at the ref. From what I know the English only go super nuts for International games. Not to say they don't support their club teams, because they do, but they aren't overly routy for them.

That wouldn't suprise me at all, ESPN tends to report the negative sports more than the positive, especially when it comes to soccer etc. I never really thought about the thousands of soccer matches that are played in Europe and around the world that don't have maniacs doing crap like we saw on the video. You just tend to see the racism, brawls, and anti-American sentiments reported on the news over here.

Good writeup, but the UK on the whole isn't all that great. It's more England during league games that is ok, when it comes to internationals and Scotland and Ireland it's not as pretty. Canada and the US are only exempt because we don't care about soccer.

And btw, Beasley is my favorite player since watching him on the Fire. I really hope the US does well in 06 (wow, hard to believe it's only a year away) and Beasley's club team, PSV Eindhoven (Dutch club), is in the Champion's League semis. :usa

Awesome. Both of the Beasleys (DaMarcus and Jamar) went to my middle school and high school.
