LosMediasBlancas
Last night someone committed a 3 run error in the bottom of the ninth which cost his team (Giants?) the game. I did something very similar in H.S. The following day, there was a small write up about it in The Sun Times. My coach, blew it up and taped it outside his office for everyone to see. Kinda funny now, but I wanted to transfer schools at the time. What is your worst, personal sports moment. Any type of organzied sports story will do. Pauly8509CWS
One I can remember is in last year's High School Hockey state tournament. WE were playing way up north in the Gurnee Mills rink. I'm the goalie for my team and a player from the opposing team had a breakaway and instead of shooting decided to run me over and let the puck roll in. As a level 3 hockey official I protested that the goal be disallowed because it should be goaltender interference. Except I said it along the lines of, "Thats f***ing bulls*** you northside homer that should be washed out and he should get a penalty." Needless to say I got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and they scored on the power play. We lost 2-1. Brian
Freshmen year, we were in a scoreless game in the bottom of the 7th, we only play 7 in high school, and they had a guy on 2nd and two outs. I played first and the batter hit a little come backer to the pitcher for an easy out, now the way this field was set up, the sun was going down and I had the sun in my face and it was bright. Pitcher tosses an easy throw for me, but I never saw it in the light and the ball sailed past me, the run scored and we lost.
3E8
I started in the first game of our Pony League playoffs. The first batter I faced, struck him out easily. After that, something happened (maybe too much confidence?) and I couldn't find the strike zone at all. By the time the coach pulled me, it was too late for us. I felt so terrible. YASNY
As a kid, playing pickup hockey, I was a pretty damn decent goalie. One of the older guys I had played against went on to coach in a street hockey league. He remembered me being pretty good, asked if I wanted to play for his team. Well, it had been a few months as these games where being played in late fall. He put me between the pipes, against the best team in the league ... without one minute of practice .... they put a 10 spot on me. :headshake

I played goal in floor hockey ( not well, as you're about to hear ). They played me against this team that had a former minor-league pro and an alternate for the Olympics. Not a good idea. They put NINETEEN past me, and I had to make a glove save with 5 seconds left to avoid the dreaded 20.... They couldn't yank me, either, since I was only playing because our REAL goalie was injured. My play that day = :puke Their team that day = MY team that day = :headshake :rolly
EvilJester99
Back in HS I was a fullback and punter. I was punting and when the ball was snapped, I went to deliver the boot to it and instead of flattening my foot to make good contact, I tilted my toe upwards and punted the ball about 60 feet STRAIGHT UP in the air for a grand total of a 4 yd punt... I was totally embarrassed...
Dick Allen
In high school I was playing CF and a ball was hit deep. They had those wooden snow fences around the field. There were no warning track and I knew I was getting close so I jumped/dove and the ball glanced off my glove but stayed in the park. Unfortunately for me, I went flying over the fence and knocked the wind out of myself. One of my closest friends was playing LF and he picked up the ball and could barely throw it back to the infield he was laughing so hard. Hilarious.
T R U
I have two.. one is bad and the other is funny When I was 14 my little league All Stars team made it into the second round.. Well so far I had 5 HR's in the 4 games we have played and I was the best player on the team.. Well we were playing our leagues rival (We were Katy American, playing Katy National) We were losing like 4 - 0 when I came up and hit a 3 run HR... the next inning, anothre player on our team hit a 3 run HR.. so we were up heading into the last inning I think it was 6 - 5.. Well, they had the bases loaded with 2 outs and im in CF.. The ball gets hit right to me, pop fly, didnt have to run around or anything it was just a deep pop fly.. I missed it, completely.. Didnt hit my glove, nothing.. Just missed it.. They scored and won the game 7-6 and we were eliminated.. After that I never played baseball as good as I had in the past, I guess it screwed with my mind because I use to be awesome at baseball, but after that happened.. I just couldnt do it anymore.. My friend who was playing SS told me that when the ball was hit he had already started jogging to the dugout because thats how sure he was I would have had that.. Going into my freshman year in HS the baseball coach said that two kids didnt even have to try out they were already on the team, me and this pitcher.. well I lasted bout a year and a half before I finally had to quit because I just wasnt the same player anymore.. I wish I would have caught it though, I really did enjoy baseball.. Second story, I was playing on a Pony select team.. My friend was pitching and they had the bases loaded.. well the guy at bat crushed one straight to me, I started sprinting back looking at the ball.. Well the ball started coming down and I was getting ready to catch it when I slammed face first into the fence.. And it wasnt a wooden fence it was a chain link fence.. This is the worst part.. My feet got stuck under the fence, so I couldnt move.. They got an in the park grand slam and I had a busted lip and cut knee.. oh yeah and everyone laughed at my ass when I got back to the dugout.. Ohh, one more.. a few games later I got to pitch for that select team and I had a Grand Slam and a Solo HR hit off me in the same inning.. When the coach came to take me out he said "Sometimes your a bug, sometimes your a windshield"
CanOfCorn
Freshmen swimming. I go to the blocks. I'm swimming the 50 Butterfly. I'm focused. "Swim your race. Concentrate. Don't DQ." Then I hear the words... "Swimmer, take your marks." I look to each side of me and I'm the only one swimming this event. I was laughing the whole way. I could see my teammates cheering me on against...no one. I double touched, but I think they let it go because EVERYONE in the place was laughing. I did get some important points for the team though. AND...I WON!!!!
Heartattack19
When i was a senoir on varsity, we were playing St. Francis De Sales. I was playing Right Field, the batter crused one over my head. The ball hit the fence and stopped on the warning track. The plastice advertisements from the fence fell down and the ball was sitting on this big plastic sign. I get to the ball and fall down. Get up, go to throw, fall agin, the ball flew backwards. Again the same thing happens AGAIN! I chase the ball, and proceed to overthrough the cutoff man! Another time, lost three consecutive flyballs in the sun against St. Pats, with sunglassess. We were up 1-0, lost 2-1 because of that one inning. Bad Memories, funn tas hell now 8 years later! Soxy
Mine was when I was pretty young. I was playing soccer and for some reason my dad (the coach) put in as a goalie, probably because I was the tallest kid, I don't know. Well, I was about 7 or 8 and not a good goalie--I never really grasped the use your hands during soccer. So, this ball comes at me and I got to block it/head it/no friggin' idea. But it hits me square in the face. I fall backwards. The ball had hit me in the mouth and my teeth cut up the inside of my mouth so it was kind of oozing blood. And then it knocked out an already loose tooth. I was in a decent amount of pain and veeeeeeerrrrrrry embarressed. It was awful. On the plus side, the tooth fairy left me extra for that one AND I never had to play goalie again.... mreye
First time I ever pitched in "Minor Leagues." I was around 7 or 8 years old. We had a 5 run limit. I walked everyone! All 5 runs were walked in. That's not the worst part. Well, I'm a redhead and had a pretty bad temper, so I kicked and threw everything I could find in the dugout until I felt someone grab me by the back of my jersey...it was my Mom! She dragged my ass to the car and took me home. I heard someone say I was on deck as I was being dragged. We laugh about it now and I've cooled my temper somewhat since then. LosMediasBlancas
Wow, those are great. I guess I can tell mine now without too much shame. I played LF, we're up by 2 in the bottom of the 7th, or 9th, I think we only played 7 back then. There are 2 outs and the bases are loaded. A routine fly ball is hit to me (so I was told later), game over, right? Nope, I COMPLETELY SNOOZED and didn't even break for the ball. I mean I am standing there totally still, looking toward home plate. I heard the centerfielder yell my name, but I still have no clue why or where the ball is. So I spin around twice, looking around, cartoon style. The ball had bounced like 30 feet behind me, rolled to the fence, 3 runs score and we lose. Actually, I think the hitter got an inside the park home run. To this day, I have no clue what was on my mind during that play, but I zoned out completely. The next day, I see the blip from the Sun Times article blown up huge and taped on my coach's door.
YASNY
Hearing all these childhood stories reminds me of the most incredible youth baseball game I've ever seen. This involves my son's team and the opposing team is one that would become the arch rivals as years went by. But this was when all the players were 7 years old. Now these were two very good teams. But this game, with 7 year old players was unique. How so? Have you ever seen a game with kids this young that at the end of 7 innings, or regulation, the score was 0-0? I swear this happened. Nobody walking 5 batters in row, nothing like that. Actually, the game was scoreless untill the 9th inning. "We" were the home team and they scored 3 in the top of the 9th. Bottom of the 9th, 2 outs we have runners on 1st and 2nd (my son on 2nd). A ground ball to 3rd .. the thirdbaseman tags my son on the way to third, but as my son runs past the ball flies out of the glove and lands in short left field. My son didn't realize this and start trotting across the infield toward the first base dugout. I'm coaching first and yell, "Go back to third". He says, "Dad, I'm out." I respond, as I'm drifting down the line towards home to cut him off ... "Go back to third!". (He had never touched the bag). Well, he makes back to 3rd before they get the ball to the bag. The next guy up triples and clears the bases to tie the game. Next pitch, we have him steal home when the catcher returns the ball to pitcher. Game! 4-3 in 9 innings. We had people 3 to 4 deep around the field watching those two teams of 7 year olds go at it.
Pauly8509CWS
Oh god, I just remembered another one. My hockey team was in Pekin, IL this past february and playing hard with a team who was a little better than us. It was 1-1 in the second period and in a span of 3 minutes I gave up two goals... FROM THE REDLINE!!!! My confidence for the game was shot and we lost 6-1, It was so sad that we actually watched it at a team banquet last weekend and everyone was making jokes about that to me. SuperSteve
I was pinned in the semifinals of a state wrestling tournament in 58 seconds. That sucked pretty bad. It was 8th grade, but still probably as bad as it gets. The kid who pinned me caught me in a nasty craddle...he stuck the kid in the finals in 2:00 though. EvilMonkey
INtramural basketball game. My team losing by 20 points. All week long I had been dunking the ball in practice games, but had not been able to pull it off in a real game. (remember, this was 16 years and 70 pounds ago!) 30 seconds left, my team reabounds and myself and one other guy break out. Pass to the other guy, who sees me running behind, and he drops a beautiful bounce pass to me in stride. I grab the ball, dribble once, and just as I start to elevate, I hit a loose floorboard (the gym had the old wooden floors) and blow out my right knee, effectively ending the game with about 10 seconds still left on the clock. At least I got my last 2 years of school paid for because of it, but I got kidded about it forever. And was never able to dunk again. whitesoxin'
Sky high fly to left in the top of the 6th inning. I am in left field and it is a tied game. I was scheduled to come in to pitch in the bottom of the inning. So back to the fly ball. It was really really windy and the ball kept carrying, and carrying. I went from a jog for the ball to a dead sprint. Little did I know the fence was fast approaching. I crashed the whole right side of my body into the fence. I was cut up on my face, shoulder, and knee. I couldn't come in to pitch and we ended up losing. Other than that, I dont have too many embarassing moments. I have a lot of embarassing moments from practices, but I don't have many others from gameplay.
