southsider2k5
Again the kid is getting picked on. When will people learn that you have got to be careful how you treat people? Not that the antagonist deserved this, but still, this stuff is avoidable.
jackie hayes
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 06:37 PM) Again the kid is getting picked on. When will people learn that you have got to be careful how you treat people? Not that the antagonist deserved this, but still, this stuff is avoidable. Are you joking? These are kids -- teasing is never, ever going to go away. This is horrible, but noone except the attacker can be blamed for this. Edit: I know you're not joking, I didn't mean that literally. That's just something I say automatically when I'm surprised at some statement. Gotta be more careful about that. TheBigHurt35
The idiot antagonist deserved a punch in the mouth, not a bat to the head. It doesn't surprise me that this happened in California, where the concept of "parenting" is foreign to so many.

This is horrible, but noone except the attacker can be blamed for this. Look at the big picture. Its become a pattern in our society that we keep ignoring. The kid who shot up the schools on the Indian Reservation, the kids at Columbine etc, they were all teased, beat up, bullied, etc. There is no excuse for what the kid did, but there is a reason. Ignoring the reason, just means that it is going to keep happening. If that doesn't bother you, fine.

Not fair at all -- according to the article, these appeared to everyone as ordinary kids. There's no pattern, and no basis for blaming the parents. DonkeyKongerko
It's pretty apparent this was one of those spur of the moment things. I don't think this kid ever imagined a bat to the head could have killed someone. He must've been pretty angry to swing it that hard. jackie hayes
Honestly, when you were a kid you never joshed someone about beating their team, or blocking a shot, or anything -- even one time? Everyone does that after the game, unless you have an all-Jesus basketball game. Then you drop it, and that's it. That's all this was -- "the boys had no history of problems". southsider2k5
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 01:47 PM) Constant teasing is one thing, but this is ONE TIME. Not at all the same. I have a hard time believing that this was just a one time thing. Either that or the boy had big problems before. Heck they can find people to stand up and say how great serial killers are, I don't think they would have a hard time finding people to say that this was isolated or that this boy was normal. You just don't kill someone with a baseball bat over somthing like this, with no prior provocation or problems. One of the sides stories doesn't add up. TheBigHurt35
QUOTE(mreye @ Apr 14, 2005 -> 12:47 PM) :rolly Broad brush warning...again. "So many" does not equal "everyone." I'll go out on a limb and predict that California's violent crime rate is probably significantly higher than, say, Utah's or Indiana's. And I'll bet that has a lot to do with how children are being raised in those states.

Steff
I heard about this on Court TV last night.. Poor kids.. poor parents. What a shame.. And Mike.. while I agree something is likely amiss here.. people quoted in the article did say that they were totally shocked.. that the kid was fine before the incident.. that the teasing was going both ways until seconds before the incident. maybe he did just "snap". Just can't imagine it.. :headshake Oh eye.. LMAO..

LosMediasBlancas
One of the most valuable lessons I learned as a kid is: you never know who you're f***in' with. Seems like some parents need to a better job of communicating that to their kids. Forget all the, 'well Billy it's not nice, or you might hurt people's feelings' crap. Go with, 'don't f*** with people cuz sometimes they snap and go ape s***.'

I was in a number of fights in my pre-teen days and never even THOUGHT about using a freaking weapon against another kid.

Go with, 'don't f*** with people cuz sometimes they snap and go ape s***.' ^^^^^^ Exactly. To be quite honest, I don't mess with people I don't know. Maybe it was because I never really wanted my ass kicked or something, but I never picked on people I didn't know. You just don't know who you are dealing with. I think it is a valuable lesson to pass on.
