Why Do So Many Fans

Alright I've long pondered this so I'm going to bring it up. I've always wondered why so many fans hate a player because he makes such and such amount of money. Out here in SoCal tons of people hate Darren Dreifort cause he makes 11 million a year and is hurt. They call up on sports radio and try to call him an asshole, etc. I know many Bull fans hate AD because he makes big bucks. You have all those people that call A-Rod Pay-Rod.

I don't get it, why hate a player because a team or owner is willing to give him money. If your going to hate a player hate it because of his production on th field or him being an ass to fans off the field or getting in trouble with the law.

Its kind of one of my peeves. People always call players greedy (and yes there are plenty of greedy players) but fact is they are getting these multi million dollar offers from the owners. What do you want them to do, no, I'm going to turn down this 35 mill deal and sign for 20 million with some small payroll club. None of us would do that if you had a job offer (at a place you wanted to go to and a job you liked) for like 5 mill at some other company compared to the 100,000 your making now (Just throwing out some make believe numbers).

A unrealistic as it is, I don't believe that the fans should know what players make because it isn't out business. It's not our business what the grocery store clerk makes and I feel similarly with ballplayers. I guess the one good thing that comes out of knowing is accountability of ownership but I don't get hating a guy for his paycheck either.

In a nutshell, the players often take the brunt of a fan's frustration with the game as a whole. Players earn more money than most fans could even dream about. They do it playing a game. Doesn't help that players aren't always the most accommodating. Makes matters worse that ticket, parking and concession prices are so high to accommodate for such salaries.

Some of it is deserved, some of it is not. I know it is not baseball, but Terrell Owens current whining about renegotiating the deal he signed last year is a perfect example. When guys do that, it hurts all players in a small way in many fans minds. Guilt by association.

I think also, atleast for me, if a player is earning 11 million a year and isn't actually "earning" that salary, then it makes me angry. Partly because of jealousy, but also because I know he's taking up salary that someone else could have used to help the team even more. Do I think any player in baseball can actually earn 11 million by hitting a baseball or throwing a baseball? Thats a whole other story.

The weird thing is that so many of these same fans are also prone to whining about how low the payroll is, no matter what the payroll actually is. Many of them also call up talk shows hating on the owners for being so "cheap." Doesn't make any sense to dump on the players for being "greedy" and then turn around and dump on the owners for not throwing even more money at the allegedly greedy players.

It is our business. we help pay for their salaries. If Im a season ticket holder, or even if Im a fan who spends tons of money and time on the team I love, It is my business to know what Im spending it on.

I'm one of those people who hate players that make the big bucks, unless their on my team. I hate when Yankmee fans say the mets and other teams compare to us in salary. Sorry Yankmee fans the last time I checked, the mets along with with the rest of the top 5 teams, payroll is half of the Yankmees. And some teams even like 1/5 of the Yankmees or even lower. I hate baseball for that.
