Punch and Judy Garland
I've never seen anything like I saw in 03. This city was consumed by the Cubs, even in the NLDS. Life didn't stop during the 2000 playoffs like it did for the Cubs. It's just not gonna happen, but who cares anymore?
southsider2k5
QUOTE(Steff @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 03:31 PM) To those around 30.. was losing HC that big of a deal to you guys..?? I ask this because if it wasn't.. then do you think it's appropriate to still blame that on lack of attention? Most season ticket holders I know are in the 28 to 40 range... Me personally, I don't care that he was fired. I'm as old as you are, and I remember my dad HATED Harry even when he was with the Sox, and I think I just picked that up from him as well. I always thought it was a good thing, especially as he turned into a drunken old fool behind the mike.
southsider2k5
QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) For many(mostly the older fans) it was definitely part of the equation, that he went over to the scrubs and turned the place into the beer garden it is now stings a little more. Let me ask you this, if a new owner came in now and summararily fired Hawk would it bother you? It depends on what accompanied it. If they came in and doubled the payroll, fire away. If they came in and went Pittsburgh Pirates on us, then I would be pissed. In short, it doesn't matter to me who is in the booth. It matters what is on the field. YASNY
I don't think Harry Carey leaving the Sox booth hurt near as much as Harry going into the Cubs booth. When Harry was with the sox, Comiskey Park was "the world's largest tavern". When he took his drunk ass north, Wrigley became "the world's largest garden party". That, along with the "Beautiful Wrigley Field" bulls***, has hurt the Sox more than anything, since that implies "as opposed to that dump on the southside". The Sox were turning it around in the early '90's, but JR had to go and screw up by being a hardass on the labor front, not only pissing off fans for that reason alone, but by costing the Sox a possible-probable World Series. Then the White Flag trade was the last straw for so many fans. Slowly, steadily it appears to me the pendulum is swinging back towards the Sox. Wrigley is decomposing around them as is the neighborhood around Wrigley. Tribco is constantly pissing off the fans, with the ticket scalping fiasco and the rooftop controversy. The Cub players and manager constantly b****ing, moaning and sniping are also eroding the misconceived Wrigley magic. They are no longer the "lovable losers", just losers and chokers. It's happening folks. The southside franchise will rise again. Book it. Edited April 19, 2005 by YASNY
Steff
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 06:43 PM) I'm as old as you are, and I remember my dad HATED Harry even when he was with the Sox, and I think I just picked that up from him as well. I always thought it was a good thing, especially as he turned into a drunken old fool behind the mike. My dad, grandfather, and great grandfather all hated him. Probably why I didn't pay much attention to him. IMO he was a nasty drunk and an embarassment to the Cubs in the booth nearing the end of his career. he could barely get a word out without slurring.. nice alcoholic representation there. No wonder that place turned into what it has.
Wong & Owens
IMO, the main reason why the Cubs seem to have a grip on the city and the media coverage is simply because the Cubs are owned by, well a media conglomerate. WGN was the first nationwide television network, WGN Radio has always gotten huge ratings, and the Tribune is one of the countries biggest newspapers. Obviously, these mediums will focus more on the Cubs than the Sox, and having a lovable cartoonish mascot(Caray) at a time when the nation was just starting to get cable television helped a bit. That idiotic Sportsvision deal did NOT help matters, the Sox should have stayed on free t.v.
sec159row2
QUOTE(Gldfinger5 @ Apr 18, 2005 -> 11:55 AM) I was listening to Lawrence Holmes last night and he was discussing the differences between the Cubs and White Sox in terms of media attention, fan base, and just overall popularity. One of the main discussions is why the Cubs are more popular and if the city of Chicago was ever a White Sox town. Now I'm only 25 so I can't go back to far, but I thought in the early 90's when the jerseys changed and we were one of the best teams in baseball that it was more of a Sox town than Cubs town. Do you guys agree or do you know of a time when you could be talking baseball with someone from outside Chicago and they'd just assume you were a Sox fan rather than a Cubs fan?? I grew up on the southside.. still live there... and it took till I was 14 to find out there was another team in chicago... the 84 playoffs woke me up to the cubs... prior to 84 the only team in chicago I knew of was the sox... ignorance truely is bliss... soxhawks
alot of cub fans just become cub fans, i can remember back in like first through fifth grade, summer camps and stuff like would take kids to cub games, never to sox games so in my opinion that is the reason for the recent influx in cub fans along with the espn hype bulls***. However with the rise of the cub fans, the boy scouts and summer camps will not have the power to brainwash young kids into becoming cub fans
