Y2HH
Pretty amazing that they elected him being he was in the Hitler youth, although he was a reluctant member, who wouldn't say they were reluctant members in this day? Still suprising. But...long live the Pope! -y2
The Critic
He's 78 years old? Isn't there anyone somewhat younger they'd feel confident about for this position? Seems to me that they'll be doing this again relatively soon.
Y2HH
Me, but they said no and slammed the door in my face. QUOTE(The Critic @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 10:56 AM) He's 78 years old? Soxy
Not thrilled with this choice--but also not a Catholic. Like the name, though, hopefully he'll model himself on the last Benedict....
RibbieRubarb
I think this is a very controversial choice. He is an extremely conservative voice in the Catholic Church. He said in 2004 that American Catholics who vote for a Presidential Candidate who is Pro-Choice should be denied Communion He also said that the Media exaggerated the sexual abuse scandals. - ABC News At the same time he is a powerful speaker, quick-witted, and charming. He was one of Pope John Paul II's closest advisors.

Rex Kickass
Yeah, I can't say that I'm super pleased, but I think they wanted a pope who would have a shorter reign. Benedict XVI will probably be pope for a couple/few years. I'm kind of surprised they didn't choose an Italian pope.

TheBigHurt35
I thought that they would have chosen a Pope from South/Central America or Africa. But I guess not. Then again, it doesn't surprise me that the notoriously conservative Catholic Church may be hesitant to pick a non-Caucasian.
Rex Kickass
There are portions of the Catholic Church, even in the College of Cardinals that aren't as conservative as you might think.

Soxy
QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 19, 2005 -> 11:23 AM) A lot of us are Catholic. Or religious and are looking to see how the new pope will affect relations with other religions, nations, etc. Also, the man is a moral compass for the world--and it will be interesting to hear his stance on things. For example, his name suggests he will be a huge advocate for Peace.

Ask seriously next time and don't crack "Cheers" jokes and maybe I/we won't "freak out." when I said freaking out about this I meant the way people were postingin reguards to the new pope being selected.. Maybe I wont crack jokes if someone just explained what the deal is.. I asked why everyone cares so much and then followed with how I feel about it, who cares.. all I wanted was to know what the deal was, because obviously I didnt know
