Point guard signs with Hoosiers

By Phillip B. Wilson

Where Indiana University was a men’s team without a true point guard last season. The Hoosiers now have two for next season.

IU received the signed paper work today on Georgia Perimeter College’s Earl Calloway, a 6 3, 175 pound junior college All American honorable mention. He joins Auburn transfer Lewis Monroe in a backcourt that coach Mike Davis will expect to play more up tempo.

“He’s really fast. His speed is his strength,” Davis said of Calloway, IU’s first JUCO transfer since Lynn Washington in 1999 2000. “He gives us a different look with his speed and quickness.

“We’re just trying to speed up the game and the way you do that is getting fast players. This guy Earl, he can push it up fast, after a make or a miss.”

Calloway averaged 18 points, 4.8 assists and 5 steals per game in one season at GPC. He shot 45 percent from 3 point range, ranking fifth nationally among JUCO players.

The College Park, Ga., native is from the same Atlanta high school, Westlake, as former Hoosier A.J. Moye, a regular through the 2003 2004 season.

Before transferring to junior college, Calloway averaged 1.9 points in 28 games at New Mexico State for coach Lou Henson. But at the outset of his sophomore year, the guard was suspended indefinitely for violating an undisclosed team rule.

Last season, the Hoosiers struggled to a 15 14 record and first round National Invitation Tournament exit with junior shooting guard Marshall Strickland at the point. Strickland was third on the team in minutes, yet his 36.6 shooting percentage was worst among regulars. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists.

Since the season ending 67 60 home loss to Vanderbilt, junior All Big Ten shooting guard Bracey Wright has declared for the NBA draft and sophomore forward Pat Ewing Jr. has announced he will transfer to his father’s alma mater, Georgetown.

That opened up roster spots for Davis to bolster a talented but young team led by Big Ten Freshman of the Year D.J. White.

It’s widely speculated that Davis, 29 29 over the past two seasons without an NCAA berth, will need this next recruiting class to deliver immediately to save his job. He’s Davis is counting on another Auburn transfer, Marco Killingsworth, to be an impact post presence. The 6 9 and 250 pound forward was All Southeastern Conference for the Tigers.

The other newcomers are Phoenix shooting guard Joey Shaw and 6 11 Australian post player Ben Allen, each of whom committed in November. Shaw scored 28 points and was named MVP of Arizona’s prep all star game in Phoenix on April 10. That same day, Allen had 10 points and three rebounds in 16 minutes of a World Select team’s 106 98 loss to a USA Select Team in Memphis.

The Hoosiers had initially sought another JUCO point guard, Shaun Davis of Southern Idaho. But those plans fell through when Southern Idaho coach Gib Arnold landed an assistant job with USC, prompting Davis to sign with the Trojans.
